Good question. Good responsible churches give their members an accounting. Some churches have boards that approve expenditures. Some allow the pastor to make the decision alone. If you are asked to tithe you should expect your church leaders to be responsible and account for the money you give. Not just to prove they are good stewards of what the congregation gives but to let others know the good things the church is accomplishing. In my church we spent nearly $900,000 on missions and many more thousands to support a new medical van that costs nothing for the people who come. The church has volunteers to man the medical van and the dental van. The church as a congregation pay for any expenses of meeting the needs in the community.
Yep--you should ask if your church is building a glass temple or if they are building on the rock.

I never ask where the money goes I do as according to Malachi 3:8, I am not concerned about what happens with the money, I am more concerned when I don't give my 10% as required in Malachi 3:8, I am a faithful tither and when I am faithful to God, He has many times opened up the windows from heaven and poured out so many blessings, I honestly didn't have room for all the blessings. So I don't question what happens with the money, I don't feel it is my place, as long as I am paying tithes God honors that. And how the church uses or misuses the money God will handle that.

I don't like the idea of giving money to the church, simply because my husband does so and he claims that's charity and I really don't think so. In my opinion, charity is when we help someone directly and not through a mediator, no matter who is the mediator, the church or any other institution. It is really an easy way out of his duty on helping others and feel good about himself. My husband church shows the balance once a month and the total they make is absurdly high. They could feed half the world with that money.
My religion, though, we don't pay anything, we don't give money. We accept donation which is discreetly mentioned only in the website. Nobody passes the bowl or have a place to put the money during the meetings.
"Give for free what you receive for free".
Peace!

Our church has a business meeting the first Sunday of every month. The church treasurer gives an account of every penny that came in (not by name, just total amounts) and every penny that went out, who it went to, and what it was for. In case someone cannot make the meeting, the financials are posted on a bulletin board in our church for everyone to read. The vast majority of Protestant churches operate in this manner. I wouldn't attend a church that takes money and gives no account for where it goes. I don't know about the Catholic church.

Never give your tithes blindly to anyone. You should be lead of the Holy Spirit as to where you need to plant your seed (tithes). It should always be In Good Soil, and always your home church. Unless you're In between churches due to moving...etc.Then God can direct you to give to a good ministry until you find another home church.. They should be held In accountability for where the funds are spent.

Most churches budgets and books are open for the entire church and a member can view them at any time. Our church posts monthly statements with an account of where the money goes.
And each year we have a budget proposed and discussed with the entire congregation and it is voted on.

Yes u should know where it goes..Although most times it is not used how it is supposed to be..Tithing is really for the storehouse..Which means u give so u can put food in the storehouse so if any one of ur people or members get in a bind or dont have enough, they can get from the storehouse..But this day in age,u rarely get tithing in its purest form.originally,u gave from ur harvest when that time came, that was ur tithe,10 percent of ur harvest..If u couldnt carry it,if it was too far,the place where u had to go,then u could convert it over to money, pay ur percent, and do it that way,but times have changed and no one does it right anymore, only a few..When i saw my tithes werent being used correctly,i stopped..Also tithes help not only with food, but with essential needs, like dpl, gas, water, for wherever u assemble at,or individual families that need help..Tithes are so everyone can pitch in and help if themselves or anyone else ever needs it..Im fortunate to be in an assembly one of the few that does tithing according to the word..If we ever need for gas food, whatever, long as we "pay" tithes,we can get whatever we need, and we still pay that back, but its never a deadline..Shalom

Being a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...it is very obvious where it goes. That being said...paying my tithing is not about what the church does with the money but weather or not I obey and pay it. I also believe that if you don't trust your Church...maybe you should find another church to give your tithe to.

I was raised in a Presbyterian church, and we have access to all of the information about how our money is spent---what the pastor's salary is, what the janitor's salary is, what is the electric bill, how much a contractor was paid to fix a broken window, how much goes to support charitable works, everything. Many mainstream Protestant denominations are the same---Methodist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, for 3.
Many cults, notably the Mormans and Jehovah's Witnesses, are very secretive about their finances.
Are there any charities and/or soup kitchens and/or homeless shelters that are financially supported by Wiccans?
