The below website will give you a general history on American railroading.

Probably the best recognized general railroading school is the Modoc Railroad Academy located in Madison, California (they can certify you as a conductor and engineer). It's certainly not the only one, however, as each major Class I carrier has of list of different schools where you can become certified (as a conductor or engineer) to join their workforce (another is listed below). There are also several colleges and universities across the country that offer classes on railroading as related to history, business, and economics/marketing although I don't know of any specific courses off-hand.
