I have bought a ticket back home for the weekend from uni (Nottingham to London) but now my plans have changed and I need to get off at a stop before London. Does anyone know if the tickets barriers at the station will let me through, if the person on duty will let me through or will I have to buy another ticket?

It seems silly buying a whole new ticket if I've paid to go all the way to london anyway...

I can't see that getting off before the stop to which you have brought the ticket will cause any problems. I'm not sure that there are automatic barriers anyway. You don't say what sort of ticket you have - some permit a break of journey, others don't. If yours is the latter just hand it in and say you aren't going to use it again (if their is a ticket collector at the barrier)
