There's been a ton of questions about a non-existent draft. Questions of the "what's in it for me" variety about enlisting. Questions about negotiating a deal concerning enlistment like the military was some sort of yard sale. Questions about finding a "safe" unit that doesn't deploy. These are mainly asked by the generation we gave birth to. I think we failed in passing down vital knowledge to them.

I cannot STAND the questions that want jobs that don't deploy. Is it so hard to understand that the job of the US Military (all branches) is to support whatever conflict is going on? That means you may just have to leave mommy and daddy for a little while.

What drives me even battier are the wives and family members... I'm pregnant, why can't my husband come home. I want to make plans, but I don't know if my husband's gonna be around, why can't they tell me? How do I know when my boyfriend, SR Joe Schmoe is coming home? Why doesn't the military respect girlfriends? Argh!!! If my children grow up and act like some of the people on Yahoo answers, I will feel like I failed as a parent and jump off of something. But if you think this section is bad, you should read some of the parenting questions... the next generation of kids is gonna be even worse off ;)

I'm not a veteran, but I'm married to an active duty Marine. There are still some people who join the military for the right reasons. The benefits of being in the military are great, but that shouldn't be the reason you join. If you don't want to get deployed, then perhaps the military isn't for you either. My husband has been a Marine for over 8 years now, and he's become a better man during his time in.

Thank you for you service to this country!

Hail and well met fellow Veteran!
I too wonder about the state of affairs today, I have met many young people over the last few years who are totally lost and just drifting through life looking for a purpose. When I suggest a possible hitch in the military as a possible solution they recoil and tell me that their parents would never allow them to risk their lives (not much of a loss in many cases). Maybe the parents have kept telling these snots that they are perfect and special no matter how normal and mundain they are.

Part of it is that sadly, since WW2 we will never have that kind of society again...volunteer military or not. Greed and self service truth enough are a gigantic part of our lexicon now. Plus with this current war it is very difficult to find majority who will rally around our decision to be there. I think if we just stuck to an offensive of only those responsible for the attacks on 9/11 the approval would be much higher. Not saying that there isn't corruption in every war, just that it is daily becoming more and more obvious with this one. It's sad to be sure...our military is second to none, and I applaud all of them. But, as I said before...no longer will we ever be a people who put self far behind others.

The main problem has been growing up with a constant fear of political correctness that has led to a "pussificaton" of the current generation. It is no longer ok to be a man. The best we can do is to try to do what we can at home so that we can raise at least a few children who will be willing and able to heed our nations call when they are needed most.

I think part of the difference is that the self-proclaimed "Americans" heard about "All Volunteer" military and volunteered not to serve their country.

Another part is that they're descended from the popular opinions of the 60s and 70s where if it's establishment, it's innately evil.

But, I think the main part is that not too many parents today teach responsibility. So many are irresponsible themselves. Some even deny any need to serve their country. They threaten to flee the country if it calls them to serve.

I really wonder if we could win a large war. On the scale of WWII. Most of our young people would flee to the United States of Canada. One of my two sons served in the Marines, the other didn't.
Maybe we should do as they do in Isreal. Everyone takes a tour. But that answer won't be popular on this board, which makes my point.

What planet do you come from? Do you really think any kid is gonna believe anything a parent has to say, no matter what the topic or how serious the consequences? Did you believe anything your folks told you when you were 16-18?

i don't shelter my problems nicely in life. I even tend to run far flung from my problems, making them lots worse. And when I do attempt to artwork by them I constantly finally end up regretting something regarding the recommendations i've got made. in line with threat i'm basically too complicated on myself. i've got considered the poem previously and it truly is a robust one, basically complicated now and returned to not end once you're truly down.

Yes alot of younger ones donot want to join what they see as a wrong war.But if I was young enough I would want in writing what my country is going to do for me and my family if i am disabled and unable to wok.I mean one hears these stories of one losing home ,credit and everything because some board of people whom never went over decides your not worth your pension.Or whenor if you get worse its your fault or you been out to long to be covered for this or that.
