I have just received a notice of proposed assessment from the State Of Georgia. It basically says that I have been audited and found to owe $331.00 from the year 2005. It also outlines ways I can protest.

It also says that additional information is on the reverse side of the bill. That section is blank. There is no explanation as to WHY my 2005 taxes were wrong. I called the GA Dept of Revenue, and they said that they couldn't pull up my taxes because I filed electronically. Still, no explanation as to WHY I owe them $331.00.

I can protest in writing, but how can I argue with their numbers if I don't have them?

-->Adam

P.S. If it matters, I live in Indiana and only have a little bit of LLC income from Georgia.

If you are audited, you should get a copy of the audit report. If you are unable to get it just by asking contact the State Taxpayer Advocate

My husband and I both received separate notices from Georgia with no explanation as to why we owe 546.00. I also don't know if we both owe or if it's just one payment. We live in Wisconsin and have property in Georgia.

Have you got a copy of the tax you filed electronically ,you should always keep a spare copy you can check from there or you can get a court order to force them to produce your file.

Call your accountant, send him the paperwork and tell him to deal with this. That's what they're paid for. Failing that for whatever reason, paying the $331. is a LOT better than stressing yourself out by dealing with State of Georgia.

Definitely send a written protest. Use their lack of documentation as the main reason for the protest. Seems pretty clear to me that you need to see the numbers.

* I most certainly would not send them one penny until I received a detailed explanation*! You may have to retain an attorney!
