At first, I was saying "Hey, that's discrimination! There's no way in hell this should be allowed to happen". But after considering both sides of the issue, seems like this can kind of be likened to a place of business banning smoking or certain communities being "seniors only" or something along those lines. A company can decide to not offer services or products to anyone they want, as long as they're not breaking the law. I figure hey, my money spends just as well as the next guy's - if these complexes don't want it, that's their bad. I'll just roll over to their competitor across the street.

What say you?

Well I'm biased because I have tattoos and think that rejecting tenancy based on something as trivial as tattoos is completely ridiculous. Tattoos are not the mark of a bad tenant. There are plenty of affluent folks in tie-wearing jobs that have to cover up quite a bit of ink. I hate how people think that tattoos are "trashy" or "low class". i'd like to see someone that thinks that say that to the face of an ex marine that fought in any major war and tattooed himself while sitting in a foxhole for a week straight.

so i'm guessing this particuluar apt complex/property management wouldn't rent to the inked, but probably wouldn't mind renting to people that like to cut their bodies up and put thinks like botulism and silicone in them. that's far more barbaric than tattooing.

sure, the apts are in their legal bounds to not allow certain people to rent, but i think it's still discrimination. they are assuming that just because a person has tattoos or piercings that they'll be late with rent, have keggers every night, and trash the place. that's like assuming that you rent to hispanics, they'll have 6 people living in a one bedroom with a truck on blocks in the lot, or assuming that a black tenant is a crack smoker.

i've had more trouble with "normal" neighbors than anyone else, especially the blond haired, blue eyed country girl that lived next door to me and dealt coke. or the frat boys that lived upstairs that HAD to play video games on surround sound at 4am every single morning.

it's total bullshit in my opinion. but who wants to live in san antonion anyways? that place is a shithole with nothing to offer.

I don't get it. I read the article and I still don't get it. Usually they have to give reasons for not allowing someone to rent like a bad credit score, pets, income, too many people in a small space. What's the reason on this one? I used to have a boss that made $70k a year with full sleeves. And that was for a professional consulting firm. So money wasn't the issue. I have 3 tats and own an upscale condo in a family friendly town and no one cares about tats there. Granted mine are covered, but what would happen if I got a sleeve while living there? I guess there's so many people looking to rent they can be picky.

It is disgusting and discriminatory. I don't think that a housing rental company should be allowed to discriminate. Housing is a necessity and to judge people by their "covers" is rediculous and unfair.
In my opinion rental companies should be limited to issues that are germaine to the rental only. It's legitimate to ensure that the rent can be payed and that a certain respect for neighbours will be maintained, but after that it's prying into people's private affairs.
What's next, being told they can't do groceries at their favorite store?

Thats weird cause I live in New Braunfels which is 20 minutes away from San Antonio and it seems to me they have so much diversity being a huge city you would think that that wouldnt occur. I agree with you though, money is money, if they are "too good" to accept it, someone better will. My opinion about the tats is get another one!!

i hadn't heard that but it is offensive. of course it does say that they only reject tattoos in certain placements so my husband and i would be allowed to live there. i have a full backpiece and both of my feet tattooed. he has a chest piece and both of his calves tattooed. it's very interesting. isn't it a civil right to have tattoos and live somewhere as long as you can afford to pay the rent?
i wonder what the ACLU would say?

reading the comments by other readers of the article i am really surprised... (okay not REALLY surprised but) at how many anti tattoo people there are on there. i guess i am just surrounded by so many open minded people that i am not often confronted by people's hatred for those with tattoos. people actually think that everybody with tattoos is either a gang member, biker, thug or trash. and they all assume that we can't get good jobs which is just ridiculous. oh well, stupid is as stupid does.

As long as they dont discriminate based on race, sex or age, they can pretty much rent to anyone that they please and not be breaking the law. Would you really want to rent from someone who is so small minded and conservative that they object to body art?
