We've been eating salads with grilled chicken but we would like to switch it up a little. My husband and I want to cut away from buying junk food such as sweets, chips, soft drinks, etc. Can you give me a list of things we should pick up. We have a budget of about $400. Keep in mind, we have a 2 year old too and we want him to eat healthy also.

What kind of snacks can we buy that will satisfy our sweet having taste buds?
We're going grocery shopping tonight.

Make up a menu for the week -- that will help you figure out your basic budget. I would buy 120 g. (about 4 ounces) of meat per person per lunch/supper. I would also buy one egg per person who eats breakfast. I'd buy a loaf of bread (well, I make mine in the breadmaker), and pick up another loaf later in the week. I'd also buy three potatoes per person (for the whole week).

Then get lots of good fruit -- at least two servings per person per day. Bananas are good, cheap, and you can freeze them if nobody eats them.

Also, if you can drink milk, get 2 cups (500 ml) per person per day. You may also want some yogurt.

Now, figure in an afternoon snack and maybe an evening snack for everyone.

If you need a sweet snack, try a frozen banana mixed in the blender with milk and chocolate syrup -- it's very much like a milkshake. Or blend some fruit and run it through the ice cream freezer for sorbet. Another nice, sweet snack -- apples, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Or whole wheat bread, toasted and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. The sugar is on top, so you don't need very much to pack a sweet punch. Jam and bread is also a sweet snack that's pretty good for you. Instead of soft drinks, try lemonade. Or grape juice cut with some club soda. Try out some new kinds of tea (in tea bags -- you'll save a lot of money using tea bags. Try a sampler set for the best value and most variety.) Save the soft drinks for special occasions and sick days.

For salty snacks, try popcorn, or french fries baked in the oven at 400F 200C for 10 minutes (toss 'em in a little olive oil first).

Walnuts in the shell with oranges makes a great dessert/snack for after dinner. It takes awhile to eat and peel, so you can enjoy your meal and talk leisurely.

Good luck!

I'm a vegetarian so I could help you out a little bit. You should make the transition from drinking soda, energy drinks etc. to drinking nothing but water. Getting rid of all those sugary drinks will really change your body. You don't need all those syrups and sugars in your body. Why do you think your pee comes out yellow? Because your body is dehydrated and needs more water!! Also, drink soy milk instead, it taste so much better than regular milk and it's healthier too. Wheat bread instead of white. When I get home from school I usually make a salad. Buy those packaged salads that already come washed, they are about three bucks. And mix it in a big bowl with sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, and crutons. I love eating this salad with a slice of toast and a little bit of butter :) Buy lots of delicious fruits like green apples, oranges :) strawberries, watermelon, peaches, grapes! :D I'm getting hungry just typing all this <33 Another delicious snack is, Club crackers with cream cheese and cucumber slices on top, it is SO good :] You can do the same with a piece of toast as well. Don't buy sugary cereals, buy honey bunches of oats for example. Try cutting out your meat intake. That's why most people are the way they are because they eat meat :/ Sad to say... Get some Boca burgers. They're in the freezer section, they are about 3 bucks for 4 burgers... Just remember, lots of fruits, vegetables, water and less meat! I'm not tyring to convince you into becoming a vegetarian, but seriously there is no healthier way than eating nothing but fresh, sugar less and blood less products. Good luck with everything :D If you want anymore tips feel free to message me.. ♥

The best way to keep eating healthy is to allow yourselves treats once in awhile. For example: I stopped drinking soda at home but if I go out on the weekend I will grab one and boy do I enjoy it =)

Here is some healthier snacks

Sugar-free hot chocolate
Sugar-free Jell-o pudding
Dannon light n fit yogurt(60 calories)
Veggie Chips(check the salt content though)
Cut up carrots and celery sticks
Flavored water

Foods

Wheat pasta~ to have with chicken or even just with sauce or Olive Oil and garlic.
Lean beef or pork~ if you eat it is perfectly fine in moderation
Fish~ is very good for you unless you bread it to hell and deep fry it =)
Beans~ good for you and filling
Lowfat Milk~baby needs dairy
Cheese ~ baby needs dairy
Oatmeal~ healthy and hearty
Bananas~Peaches~Apples for dessert
Canola Oil~Olive Oil

Try to stay away from high starch foods like White rice and potatoes.

All I can think of at the moment =) hope I helped =)

What about seafood? It's another healthy option. Whole grain pastas and rice are good choices. If you are in the "health" aisles of your store, stay away from the pre-packaged stuff. It's usually loaded with salt. Your best bets are always going to be fresh meats and produce. As for your treats, try yogurt topped with some granola for a crunch or even a few mini chocolate chips stirred in to satisfy a craving. My young daughter is a very healthy eater but she has never known any other way. I keep a basket in the pantry that she can reach with good snacks in it. I portion out trail mix, cheerios, raisins & other dried fruit for her snacks.

fruits are always a good choice.. apples, oranges, etc. Also, they have some meal bars in the cereal isle that offer low fat and low carb benefit with a decent taste. There's one that's made from 'sort-of' Oreos.

Low-fat chocolate milk is also a great way of getting protein and calcium and satisfying your sweet tooth as well.

ground turkey breast is a great sub for hamburger, lean pork chops, any fresh vegetable.

for your sweet taste buds: mixed nuts are a double glory for me; they satisfy my sweet and salty. also, peanut butter (in moderation) is not bad for you. oh, and low fat graham crackers, sugar free pudding and SF jello.
