If you lost your voice, there is a reason you lost it. What most people are actually meaning when they say they "lost their voice" is the fact that the cords are swollen. You would be better off waiting until you feel totally 100% before singing again, or else risk damage. Take aspirin or some other kind of OTC anti-inflammatory to ease the edema.

If your cords are swollen, there is no way to achieve the higher notes unless you are pushing. The higher notes are caused by a closer closure and stretching of the cords. If they can only close a certain amount because of the swelling, the higher notes are unreachable and you will probably crack.

steam your voice out everyday for 15mins by just breathing over a bowl of boiling water with a towel over your head and the bowl. I know it sounds ridiculous but there is no better way to clear your throat and vocal chords (it's really good for your skin too!)

dont clear your throat or cough. if you feel the urge to do this then swallow instead. tough to retrain, but necessary. don't sing, just hum and drink warm, or room temp water. you have to rest for at least a week doing these practices, and then slowly start to project. if you don't take your time, you are likely to get vocal nodes and your voice will be permanently damaged.

Listen hun, before you're training starts do some excersizes. Like sing La La La La La and go up a not with every La. And when you sing you'll know you're singing with your vocal cords, and when your singing right, your stomach will get tight when you sing. I'm in Choir and trust me I know these things!

I think you should get a professional voice teacher who can help you learn how to work your voice without damaging it.

well don't talk or sing. rest your voice and drink plenty of fluids and it should come back to normal pretty soon!
