I'm planning on buying a sony 5.1 home theater system and hooking it up through the optical digital outport of my directv box. Would I then be getting 5.1 surround sound on all channels?

If the answer is no, would upgrading my directv equipment to HD (which I eventually plan on doing) result in getting all channels in 5.1?

Thanks.

How can you tell which shows are broadcast in 5.1 and which are not?

I'm looking at the channel discriptions and I dont see anything regarding audio.

With any TV service whether it's DirectTV, Dish, Comcast, etc you are only going to get 5:1 on shows that are broadcast in 5:1. It's really more the network feed than your cable/sat provider.

What you'll find is all the HD channels are 5:1 and most of your prime time network shows.
