Cirrhosis results from damage to liver cells from toxins, inflammation, metabolic derangements and other causes.
Damaged and dead liver cells are replaced by fibrous tissue which leads to fibrosis (scarring). Liver cells regenerate in an abnormal pattern primarily forming nodules that are surrounded by fibrous tissue. Grossly abnormal liver architecture eventually ensues that can lead to decreased blood flow to and through the liver.
Cirrhosis, especially in advanced cases, can cause profound abnormalities in the brain. In cirrhosis, some blood leaving the gut bypasses the liver as blood flow through the liver is decreased. Metabolism of components absorbed in the gut can also be decreased as liver cell function deteriorates.
Both of these derangements can lead to hepatic encephalopathy as toxic metabolites, normally removed from the blood by the liver, can reach the brain. In its early stages, subtle mental changes such as poor concentration or the inability to construct simple objects occurs. In severe cases, hepatic encephalopathy can lead to stupor, coma, brain swelling and death.

There are many factors that is taken into consideration when
someone is first diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. How much
of the liver is cirrhosis, what caused this particular
cirrhosis, how well the liver is functioning, if the patient
responds to treatment well, if they have other medical
conditions or diseases and even age and many other things.
There really is no set life expectancy set. If the patient
responds well to treatment then he may live many years...
the doctors try to slow down the process of the death of
the liver cells and if they can accomplish this and it is
caught early on...the patient may survive a very long time.
The doctor is really the only one that can give you a
true estimate of how long the patient will live. They
do this by taking blood work which will show, by
the liver enzymes, how much damage there is to the liver
and by the liver function blood tests which will show them
if the liver is able to do the functions it needs to do to
keep the body well. Then they proceed to do either
an ultrasound to observe how the blood is flowing through
the liver and if there may be any growths or appearance
of the liver being abnormal or they do a Ct scan. The best
test they do, to be certain of how far advanced a person
is in this disease, is a liver biopsy...since they can look
right at the cells of the liver and not just observe it on film.
By all these tests, they can generalize how long they
have to live...but, no one can tell you for sure.
The reason I know this is because, when someone is placed
on the transplant list, they use these tests to determine how
long they have to live without having a transplant. That
is how they are placed on the list. The healthy ones are
at the bottom of the list and may go off the list if they
become better and the ones who have a very short time
to live are right near the top cause they need the transplant
the most or they may die in a few days time period.

This will vary and, sometimes be surprising. Usually if one is very careful it's surprising how long one will live with a disease like this. If one keeps indulging in alcohol and uses other products that are damaging to the liver then, it doesn't take long at all and, it's a death warrant.
