Yes, it's how sick our society has become. It's a contest to see who is the biggest glutton. Because let's face it, eating that much without hurling takes months or years of practice- not everyone can enter these contests, only someone who practices gluttony on a daily basis. Our society should be repulsed by this.

Not everyone has acceptable talents beside shoving as much food down their throats under time limit. We'll just be glad thats not us eh? Good point though-- I've yet to look down on it quite so severely.
I've tried to get myself to eat more for the nurishment rather then just the taste of food-- as to stay healthy. That type of game is pointless and pathedic. (Along with reality T.V.)
Too bad there is not much we can do for it, their own bodies will punish them in time.

That's reward for future medical bill. Their bodies will have issues sooner or later if they keep abusing them by forcing in large amount of food :p

I think it demonstrates the fascination that our culture has with the grotesque and out of the ordinary. I completely agree that competitive eating encourages values that are unhealthy and inappropriate.
