This guy at my office brings his wife to work with him 3 days a week. She's got some disease that makes her like a 3 year old. She sits in his office and colors in coloring books and stuff. Anyway, the problem is she messes the bathroom up something horrid. She goes all the time (guess it's her medicine?) and leaves crap on the toilet seat and in the floor. We talked to our boss once and he said he would deal with it but then we asked him not because we don't want to hurt this guy's feelings. She has threatened suicide when left at a caregiver's while he works so he has to bring her. It's so disgusting and this is the only bathroom we have. What would you do?

If I were in this situation I think I would just talk to the guy and just let him know that since this is the only bathroom you guys have it's important that it stay moderately clean. So when his wife does, out of courtsey to all others in the office, it would be nice if he would just check after she's done to make sure the bathroom stays somewhat clean.
It must be hard for this guy to have to bring his wife to work with him, so be delicate when talking to him about it.

While this certainly does sound like a delicate matter, and should be handled with tact, something does need to be done about this. It's not only a matter of her well being, but the well being of those of you who are paid employees. The washroom is there for YOUR comfort after all. From the sounds of it, this isn't only frustrating and "disgusting" it's also un-hygienic. This is a concern to the health of the female employees working in your office. Your boss should certainly handle this as something needs to be done. If I were in this situation I would sit down with my boss and explain my concern, while maintaining sensitivity to the matter. I would, however, expect the situation to improve thereafter.

The husband probably has no idea that his wife is leaving the restroom in such a state. It sounds like she needs supervision when she uses the facilities and perhaps your boss could suggest that. It's disgusting to have to deal with someone else's fecal matter at work and you shouldn't have to. The husband's feelings won't be hurt - he is fully aware of his wife's issues and must have to deal with them all the time at home. If I were you, I'd let your manager handle it but insist that it be dealt with.

Go to his boss and explain the situation. If nothing is done then call the health department and advise them of the situation. This is a horrible situation for his wife to be in but there are other places and organizations that help take care of persons like this. The work place is definitely not one of those.

She should not be at your place of employment, she should be in a supervised adult daycare (of which there are many), or, if suicidal threats and ideation are that much of a problem, she needs to be hospitalized. Your co-worker, and boss, are making unsafe, unsanitary working conditions for you. You have the right to feel safe at work, and not be subjected to that mess. I'm not being racist, biased, or discriminatory, so don't even think that-your workplace is a place of business, and unless you're running either a daycare or half-way house, she should not be there. This lady needs the proper care-physcially, socially, and mentally; and you and your co-workers have the right to not have to deal with someone else's stress. This may sound harsh, but you can not be expected to continue in that kind of environment. Your co-worker can contact your facilitiy's Employee Assistance Program (if one is available), or he is going to have to contact Social Services or his wife's physician, to make arrangements for her.

i don't understand how she cannot do more than color in a book but she knows what suicide is!?!!!?!!

He needs to get her a caretaker or something. A good one would keep her entertained (i.e., not suicidal) and clean up after her. And maybe one who will come into THEIR home so she wouldn't have to be left at one's clinic/office, whatever.
He shouldn't take his wife to work, and DEFINITELY shouldn't let her mess up the bathroom. Please don't worry about his feelings. I mean.. even if you are ... he needs to know how to do this the right way, and the right way is NOT taking his wife to work with him.
So get your boss to tell him that (or at least to tell him to clean up after her)

I would not worry about the co-worker's feelings. he's probably dealt with them before. You need to have a sanitary environment.

Tell the boss so he can deal with it. In fact. someone should show the boss so he has 1st hand experience.

This is totally up to your boss to handle with your co-worker. Your co-worker needs to take necessary steps to put his wife in a diaper or something. I know that sounds horrible, but if she cannot hit the toilet, that's what it boils down to. That is so sad!!! Good luck.

Don't eat or drink anything for at least 12 hours before going to work. That should keep you from visiting the bathroom.

I can't imagine how hard it is for this guy, so please be nice if you do say anything to him about it! He might not know about it. If you talked to your boss about it, your boss might not have known what to say and might not have done anything at all about it.

I just said "about it" 4 times in 3 sentences.
