Keep in mind that any human organization has a structure and an obligation to maintain that structure, both at the level of administration and policy and the level of doctrine. Therefore, it will require members to believe and act in ways that are as much about maintaining order and identity as following Christ. Community is important, but the individual shouldn't allow it to completely take over. Part of your faith must remain personal or you are avoiding responsibility for your own actions, as well as your duty to keep your organization honest.
To follow Christ is to risk reputation, security and property for the sake of relieving suffering and challenging injustice. An honest Christian becomes a minor prophet, observing the culture, seeing what is wrong and speaking or acting to correct it. This is a personally dangerous thing. Jesus proved that. But as the old saying goes, a prophet's duty is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. This doesn't mean you have to be a perpetual crank, just notice who is "winning" and who is "losing" and figuring out why and what can be done to right the injustices. Jesus' message is "good news" for the poor and marginalized, and bad news for the rich and influential. Membership in the community is not about identity and privileges but about ownership and responsibility to perfect the community as much as possible, for everyone, building up the "kingdom of heaven" in the world around you.
Singing and praising God can be very gratifying, but if it doesn't eventually drive you out into the street to share the love it inspires with others, it's useless gong-clanging and self-serving entertainment. Real Christianity means living as Christ did, without concerning oneself with the next meal or where you will sleep tonight, only with justice and true, inner peace.

A Christian, is simply a follower of Christ. The meaning of that is perhaps a little hard to understand. Following the 10 commandments to the best of your ability, being a "good" person, and believing in God don't make you a Christian. What makes a person a Christian is, by faith, coming to know that no matter how hard you try you cannot live a life without sinning. And that you have a relationship with Christ.
The pre-Christ Jews sacrificed animals as sin offerings for their nations and tribes. God, in Christ, came to be a "sin-offering" for all time, and for all people. Being a Christian means that you acknowledge the fact that sin is in your life, and that the sacrifice of Jesus was necessary to pay for that sin (if He didn't, you have to pay the consequences of your sin). It also means that you want to have a personal relationship with Him and that you have asked Him to be the Lord of your life. This is a very brief discussion, but I hope it helps you.

The most basic definition of a Christian is one who follows Christ.
A Christian believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
When people try to differ between a "true" and a "false" Christian they are simply saying that there are some who claim to be a Christian but do not strive to live accordingly.
In order to become a Christian you must Believe, Repent, Confess and Be Baptized.

It means to follow Christ. What did Jesus do? He worshiped his Father only. Everything he did was to bring honor to God's name. Ps. 83:18 tells that name.
Jesus was a hard worker. Never did he just take it easy and say he believed and that is enough. Each day he did the will of his Father. For him, time was very short. Through his apostles, he showed how each one in the family unit has a place in his organization and work to get done. It is for each true Christian to find and do this work.

A real Chrisitan is someone who has been "Born Again" into the Body of Jesus Christ.

No church, no religion can turn a sinner into a Christian. Real Christians need to have their own personal relationship with God thru the Lord Jesus Christ.
If the local church you attend has not been teaching this, you need to find another local church.

PS: No one is "born again" thru Baptism. The only people who should be baptized in water are those who have already been born again. This is one of the major flaws in the teaching of those churches which baptize babies.

Hear His Word, (read the Bible and go to church to hear, have Bible studies, etc)
Believe it
Obey it
-confess that you believe it, that you need His salvation, that you believe Christ is the son of God and was crucified for your sins (openly, vocally before witnesses)
-ask for forgiveness of God (from God in prayer)
-be baptized (immersed in water, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit)
"Forsake not the assembly""Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." Hebrews 10:25 - go to church, edify one another, a church that professes exactly what Christ says on salvation. (church of Christ)
Spread the word, and live righteously.

no need to be christian when we ought to be saints.
Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Rev 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

You must be born again
We read in God's Holy Law book the Bible:
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. (Psalms 51:5)
The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear. (Psalms 58:3-4)
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? We read in God's Holy Law Book the Bible in John 3:5-7: Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. (John 6:44)
Be born a Christian, be born a Jew, be born a Muslim, be born a Buddhist, be born a Hindostan ect. you must be born again, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. See John 1:13
The Bible teaches that at the end of the world all the wicked will come under eternal punishment in a place called Hell, and this time may be very near. There is much Biblical evidence that points to the fall of 2011 as the end of the world.
