Nicotine patches would help a bit, and I definitely wouldn't recommend going cold turkey. I know some people swear by it, but those people are the exception. Especially if you have been smoking for a while. Withdrawal is the biggest factor in quitting and cold turkey addresses none of those. What worked for me was the medication Zyban. You quit at a gradual pace and the medicine has a slight anti-depressant in it so it really helps you with the withdrawal symptoms. Of coarse the best thing is to go over the options with your doctor to see what method works best for you. Good luck! And don't be down on yourself if you backslide a bit, don't give up you can do it!

LOL, I had a friend trying to quit smoking and he ended up smoking in addition to using the nicotine patches. Double dose of nicotine as a result. I don't know if it actually work for any body. Most people I know that actually quit smoking, they did so with cold turkey method. The government probably think that the patches are supposed to help with withdrawal symptoms.

Some people can't quit cold turkey. It either depends on the person, or it depends on how long and how much you've been smoking.
My hubby and I quit cold turkey. But I have seen people REALLY go into detox, as if nicotine was a hard drug like meth. Those people need the help of a patch. -LL

You are more likely to quit. There are two aspects to overcome, the addiction to nicotine and the process of smoking. Taking both things together is often too hard versus dealing with one while the nicotine withdrawal is gradually lessened.
And, if you think taxes are the reason, then you are naive. The government would make more taxes if you continued to smoke than if you were able to quit.

So your body doesn't go into shock and you have a breakdown. Maybe you aren't aware but some people just can't handle quitting that drastically. The patch still gives your body the nicotine it is used to daily. It slowly weans you off of nicotine.

The government simply offers it as one of many options. If cold turkey was easy they wouldn't offer any nicotine supplements. A lot of people have tried cold turkey and failed. All of the new aids are being introduced to get them to try again and hopefully be successful. I succeeded with small pieces of Nicorette gum and drumming it into my head that I was now a non-smoker as opposed to a smoker who was in the process of quitting.
