i believe so!! this is especially true in third world countries!!
i know population growth is a massive problem and if we're going to solve it or learn about it, we need to know what factors are involved that favor this growth, and i believe religion is indeed one major factor. ...its not the only one but it is big.

but i want to know YOUR opinion about this...what are your thoughts?? im not trying to stir trouble, i am just curious about your opinions.

Maybe a mercenary plutocratic predatory few and their admirers and followers think believe and expect that the need to preserve the environment by suppressing the reproductive success of the many justifies concentration of wealth of the global culture into the hands of a mercenary plutocratic predatory few. I think, believe and expect if sex for occupational, recreational and homosexual purposes were to become as acceptable in our global culture as sex for procreative purposes and sexual education were provided to the many that made these practices safer then there might not be a need to check the reproductive success of the many with psychotic extremes of poverty for the many and wealth for the few. With the support of education, entertainment and leadership that leads us to have the highest esteem of self and world we can possibly imagine, I think, believe and expect that we would be motivated to behave like friendly, homotolerant, peace makers; prevent the global culture from falling victim to apocalyptic self fulfilling prophecies; spare the environment from destruction by a war on terror fought by spreading terror in war; and better meet human demands for the necessities of life: breathable air, drinkable water, productive land and available sunlight.

Conservatives might argue that psychotic socio economic extremes of poverty for the many and wealth for the few are necessary to preserve the environment from pollution, deforestation, desertification, and desolation of the biosphere that would result if a more equitable share of the wealth of the global culture were given to the many. Conservatives might like to claim that growth of the population of the many is suppressed by concentration of the wealth of the global culture into the hands of the mercenary plutocratic predatory few, and thereby a balance is created in the body consuming biosphere between predator and prey. As a liberal, I challenge the idea that this concentration of wealth into the hands of the mercenary plutocratic predatory few is necessary to preserve the environment from desolation, degradation and destruction by the many. I see the dominance of the global culture by Abrahamic religions as a major contributing factor to the explosive growth of human population in recent history. I think, believe and expect that if sex for occupational, recreational, and homosexual purposes were deemed by more ideological authorities to be an acceptable and honorable alternative to sex for procreative purposes; then human population would naturally stablize at a level that would provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments both now and into the indefinite future.

I agree with you that it has played a major role in population growth. I have often thought about the very fact of the limitations of the areas of land mass on the planet and what would happen if the religions insisting on "being fruitful and multiplying" didn't reevaluate the situation when and if there simply was not enough land, food, or water to keep growing at an unbridled rate.

Eventually, reality would have to take over and then the religionist would have to once again listen to God's great guidance in updated mode. God would never want us to overpopulate to the point of further poverty, sickness and retardation.

In places where overpopulation has happened, it is a great tragedy to keep believing you have to make babies like a factory without intelligent control and care; lovingly though, not brutally and in a barbaric manner.

I believe what God wants is for all people to intelligently and lovingly think very seriously and carefully about making babies before they do, and the first question is "will you be able to take really good care of his children?"

Power corrupts,
Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Religions whose goal is brainwashing people do so for absolute power.

(Not all are that way, but I steer clear of those that are.)

Cult religions (and, yes, Catholicism is the biggest) are contributors to overpopulation if they actually emphasize the passage in Mosaic law forbidding men to spill their seed on the ground. Of all the scriptures to stress!

Especially in supposedly Christian churches since the whole idea was a new covenant to replace the old laws.

Guess they skip or distort Proverbs and its constant emphasis on logic and learning wisdom.

In fact, the only other scripture that could possibly mean we gotta breed-like-bunnies-or-God-will-smote us is the is Genesis 1:28; and THAT was to Adam and Eve. FUNNY part is, verse 30 says,

.................. "It Happened"!!!

As in, "IT ALREADY HAPPENED"
like, "WE DID THAT ALREADY"

I can almost hear God saying, "IT'S BEEN X-THOUSAND MILLION YEARS!!! STOP, ALREADY!!! Don't make me bust a cloud!!!"

We don't have to agree on everything but one thing seems acceptable: Religions confuse the simplest things, nothing more so than the Bible. I swear when those little scamps get together, they're worse than a bunch of lawyers.

I've known a lot of really nice religious people and most read their OWN Bible, correct their pastors when wrong and if the pastor smirks, go elsewhere. As in: Seek and you will find. That kinda thing.

While accepting that the roman church has contributed in some way to the increase in population, it`s not the main factor.
Poor people procreate in an attempt to have children who will look after them in their old age. This can be seen very clearly in the third world.
Social depravity also plays a roll, this can be seen in mammals kept in captivity.
So we can`t just blame any one factor, there are many factors which seem to be coming to head all at once.

I think that just saying "Population is getting out of hand," is enough to make people believe its true. It's not, though, with abortion, and birth control, first world countries are having less and less children. This contributes to a polarity between people who are too old to work, and reap social security benefits, and people who can work. There is always more room. We can build up until near the end of our atmosphere with good design and engineering, making it very possible for the planet to support a population of 20 billion, especially when we start treating agriculture like living space, and building extremely tall green-house buildings.
So no, I disagree. People who are actually having children are doing the right thing, and those who are waiting are contributing to the weakening of the economy, the devaluation of the dollar, inflation, and unbalancing the giri index. We need more people to keep the economy growing, and to increase quality of living. Otherwise we'll have to import labor from the people who are having children, labor which will not be as skilled as first-world labor, and who will send the money back to their countries of origin, further weakening our economy.
Religious BS aside, people need to start having more sex.

There is only one command given by God in the Bible that people tend to obey without being forced.

That would be Genesis 1:28

To understand it in context, I'd suggest you might want to read the whole chapter and a couple of chapter which follow.

Note that the only country where they have more food than people is the country which was founded by Bible believing Christians.

If you eliminate the totalitarian governments of the world, all of which are opposed to the God of Bible and replace them with God fearing people, you'd find there is plenty of food for everyone.

Its the governments which are anti God that are the problem, not religion.

I agree with that.

Unfortunately, one of the most popular techniques used by religions to gain new members, is to convince the adherants to have many, many children... to litterally create new adepts.

This interference in normal human reproduction behavior is causing an explosion of population. This quest for dominance reminds me of the behavior of viruses, who attack by overwhelming the organism they are invading.

In this case, the goal is to suffocate other beliefs by sheer number.

In this day and age, sustaining such orders is irresponsible behavior from religious authorities. Fortunately, some religions are now tempering the reproduction instructions to their followers.

Small edit:

On a scientific note, there are currently approximately 7 billion humans on Earth.

The ideal population, given the known resources and size of the planet, should be around 2.5 to 3 billions.

A population at this level would ensure everyone could live in the conditions of a western-european person, with access to electricity, healthcare, water, food and shelter.

The essential morality is to defence life and to guard it from any phases since conception to the natural death. It is the domain of such a religion to improve the quality of life that it chalenges our capability to solve problems encountered by dense population not in a death-oriented culture. We have some places and things to share beyond our egotism.

Yes, the Catholic church is the biggest cause, denying condoms and other forms of birth control to the people of third world countries. It's just insane. It's obvious that they believe there is merit in suffering. They don't want to prevent AIDS and STDs because the sex is a sin, and they don't want to prevent unwanted pregnancies because it's better that unwanted babies are born and the people suffer, than to have sex for pleasure. One of the few free pleasures these people have.
