Hi there. Sorry to hear that you're in pain. There could be a host of reasons why you are experiencing the pain, ranging from metabolic to orthopedic reasons. However, a metabolic etiology for pain in the interphalangeal joint/region of the great toe is relatively uncommon. Some of the more common reasons you may be experiencing pain may be due to inflammation of a tendon, aggravation of the joint capsule, or even have a fracture in one of the bones. The best idea of course would be to go see a podiatrist but if you're not going to go see a doctor, at the very least give the joint some time off to heal.
