Yes, but it was a case of multiple funerals being held at the same time.

Back in May of 1985, our area was one of several hit during a tornado outbreak, with 114 twisters spinning out in a 24 hour period. Eighty-one people lost their lives.

A neighboring community held simultaneous services for the 17 lives lost in their immediate vicinity. Literally thousands of mourners attended. I believe this was to lay to rest not only those whose lives were lost, but some of the horrors of that day, as well. A way to close one chapter and start the healing, if you will.

Yes, for my uncle. He was a huge philanthropist and fund raiser though, and knew many people. He had been a DJ on AM radio for decades before retiring. We had to rent out a theater to have a public reception after the funeral because not everyone got to pay their respects during the grueling 8 hours of calling hours before the funeral. It was really wild to talk to these people because even though we knew people still remember him from his celebrity days, we always just thought of him as our uncle, and it never occurred to us how much other people really cared and were affected by his passing. I was stunned at the number of people. I don't know how many there were, but it was a constant parade of people through the whole calling hours, and at the follow up reception after the funeral.

What a beautiful tribute to your dear friend, it must have been a great consolation to her grieving family,I think it would be hard to find such attendance in many other places.
