I have a stuffy/runny nose, headache and drainage which is making me hoarse occasionally and I have to constantly clear my throat. I'm not sure if it's a sinus cold or allergies...I went outdoors to walk my dog yesterday and within minutes of going back inside, I was sneezing until bedtime.

I haven't done any sneezing today, but I actually feel worse (lots of pressure on head). I have to go out of town tomorrow...since i can't get in to see my doctor on such short notice, what's a really good otc med that i can take to kill this thing? Thanks!

If it started rather suddenly, it is probably because the weather changed, and compounded by the fact that it is fall.

Especially for the weather changing from a High pressure to Low pressure pattern, your sinuses will react by the lining swelling up, giving you congestion. Eventually this fluid begins to drain off, giving you the sore throat and runny nose.

Even so, you still do not have a cold, but this draining fluid is a great place for a cold virus to take hold. It is also a good place for bacteria to grow.

Benedryl is a nice OTC medicine that will help reduce the congestion and drainage. It may, if taken early enough, help avoid infection and getting a cold.

You probably have a cold. Take a decongestant and drink lots of water. Cough drops are good for coughing, sore throat and some help clear your sinus passages. I also use saline nose spray which has no meds in it at all but serves to clear sinuses and I use Vick's Vapo Rub under my nose. I have also found that spicy foods, especially soups and Thai food do wonders for stuffy heads.

For decongestants - I like Dayquil or Advil Cold and Sinus but any brand will probably do - just check to make sure that you're taking the appropriate one for each time of day - you don't want to take a non-drowsy one right before bed.

Your friend is very aneamic from the sounds of it as her diet does not have any iron it it. She needs to go to a health food shop and find out what type of food that she can eat with her vegan diet contain all the nutrients she needs to be healthy. You can be vegan and eat healthy but not sure what type of pulses ect there are. They will also tell her what type of vitamins she needs to put back what is obviously missing. Pop in for her and see if they have any good leaflets she can read as it sounds to me as if she has not looked into the vegan diet properly my friend is vegan and eats lots of healthy food and looks well but she researched it first. Go to library or book store and get her a good book on it she should not be fainting if she is doing it properly. If she still faints there could be an underline medical reason and doctor trip will have to be made but get her to look at vegan eating properly first to see where she is going wrong.

I use Alleve or Motrin.

I also take Hall's Mentholyptus & drink LOTS of Celestial Seasonings teas. I LOVE the "Sleepy Time".

For 3 days, that's ALL the weather folks have been talking about! Nothing like adding insult to injury, huh?

I hope you feel better! Thanks for asking. It ALL might have something to do with the change in the weather.

Get in to see another doctor, or go to "Urgent Care." or whatever your insurance company calls it. Or go to the ER. You probably need antibiotics. Unfortunately for you, there are no magic OTC meds that'll make it go away. Sorry. :(

It wouldn't hurt to talk to a pharmacist. They are so smart. make sure you're speaking to the actual pharmacist. He/She will guide you. You'll see. Do that first. Good luck, hon. :)
