Officially, (as in defined by Microsoft the manufacturer of Windows XP) the XP suffix in Windows XP refers to "eXPerience"
Windows XP was a major shift from Windows Me, its predecessor, in terms of the way the entire operating system was written from the core. All the earlier consumer versions of the Windows Operating system as in WIndows 1.0, Windows 3.0, Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, were based on the old DOS platform. An analogy would be a car with the same engine for 10 years, but different chhassis and look every year. However by the early nineties, Microsoft had developed another operating system in WIndows NT, whose core was writtenf rom thr ground-up. Windows XP was based on this core. NT was supposed to be more secure and stable. Windows NT was also supposedly meant for corporate users. WIndows XP was the first operating system from Microsoft that combined the consumer and corporate operating systems into one. In a way Microsoft wanted to convey that XP is a completely different Windows eXPerience.
In general, XP refers to "eXtreme Programming."

For all around computing XP is somewhat extra advantageous in some strategies than Vista yet quickly Microsoft would be introducing homestead windows 7 this is meant to be a huge progression over Vista. they are asserting perhaps August of this 365 days. There are beta variations around in spite of the indisputable fact that it is not complete yet.
