In the summer, it's hot, dusty and full of tanker trucks carrying oil (some of it to and from northern Iraq). To be honest, the tanker truck volume might have changed as I haven't been there in 15 years, and there's an oil pipeline to the Mediterranean now.
It's also a mostly Kurdish area, and the local people have been the main losers in clashes between the PKK and Turkish security forces.
In winter, it's the same but colder and sometimes snowier. Late spring and early autumn might be good times to visit, though I still don't think you're going to see a caped crusader.
