How does law enforcement get rid surplus ammo?
I took a tour of law enforcement agency and they had barrals
and barrals of rusty, unusable ammo that they said they were going to destroy. How do they destroy it?

They weapons are sent to a specialized recycle center. Same as what the Military does. They are torn down for parts, some refurbished, some destroyed. They inspection of the destroyed weapons is very close, making sure all parts are ground up so they can not be re-used, The scrap is sent to be melted down.

They are taken to be melted with all of the confiscated criminal case weapons. The furnace is so hot that the ammo melts faster than the gunpowder can fire the slug. But the heat from the furnace can cook them off as they are poured in. So safety precautions are still taken and the walls of the furnace are severely thick.

WHEN I WAS ASSIGNED TO THE PISTOL TEAM (ADDITIONAL DUTIES) WE WOULD COLLECT THE BRASS AND ONCE EVER QUARTER WE WOULD RELOAD OUR OWN AMMO WITH OUR MACHINE. TO RUN THE MACHINE EFFICIENTLY WE NEEDED 5,000 ROUNDS TO MAKE IT WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT TO RELOAD WAD CUTTERS.
WE WOULD CONTRACT WITH A RECYCLE FIRM TO PICK UP AND PAY US FOR UNUSABLE BRASS(FRACTURE OR CRACKS IN THE SHELL / HAD TO BLACK LIGHT ALL SHELLS) USUALLY WOULD COME OUT TO GET ABOUT 500 LBS OF BRASS AT A TIME, SO WE STORED THE UNUSABLE BRASS IN BIG KEGS OR HAD BOXES STACKED TO THE CEILINGS AT THE ARMORY.

I don't know for sure. I would think that if they don't shoot it then they would have to pay a Hazmat company to come get it. The lead is considered a toxic metal.

They probably recycle the metal by melting it down to make new ammo.
