Is this suppose to be a deep question, cause I have to say a person would have to be pretty ignorant not to know what a soul is. Maybe your just 1 of those shallow, nonthinking people who thinks anything you can't see isn't real so I guess the air you breathe is not real.

Actually, if you look very closely in the christian scriptures there is a difinitive difference between "soul" and "spirit." A soul is actually just a person/body/being (physical AND spiritual). A spirit is what most people refer to as the "soul;" But the spirit is the life-force behind our physical being; without the spirit the physical body won't survive.

Evidence? Well, that depends on how open-minded you are... When most people think of our spirits, they think of these glowy-floaty things invisible inside of us. I believe, personally, that our spirit resides in our brain. Isn't it interesting that we only use a small portion of our brains' mental capacity? What do you think that wasted space is for? Is it wasted space, or is there more there than we know about? Did you know that the human brain will "live" or be active for up to 15 minutes (and some cases more) after the heart has stopped? Why do people have near-death experiences when they have been proclaimed dead/heart stopped, yet come "back to life" a few minutes later. Scientists and doctors have also found that by putting cardiac arrest/risk patients on ice will prolong the brain functions and activity until they can transport the patient somewhere to get proper cardiac care.

Things that make you go, "hmmmm..."

Hello;
As human beings, we have both body, soul and spirit. As most of the New Testament was written in Greek. It is important to know the meaning of these two words.

1. Soul=psuche, from where we got our words psyche, psychology etc. It is our seat of knowledge, reason and thought, understanding, etc. This survives after death, and is judged

2. Spirit=pnuema, as in pneumonia. Has to do with our breathing. This stops after we die, the Bible states that is goes back to God who gave it.

3. We have a Body=so-ma. Which holds both the soul and the spirit. The soul will be reunited with the body in the Last Judgment.

We have a soul, that makes us different from the animals. Some animals can learn. Dogs, horses, pigs, dolphins.
So birds can remember words and phrases. Parrots, mynas.

But they cannot reason or build bridges or airplanes.

So years ago, I do not know where or when. But a group of doctors took in people from all nationalities and races. Who were near death. They were weighed, and the details were recorded. When they died, they were weighed again. In every test, be it male, female, child, adult, white, black, etc. They all weighed three(3) grams less!

Hope this helps.

There was an experiment conducted by Dr. Duncan MacDougal in the early 1900's that concluded the soul weighs in at 21 grams. Dr. MacDougal observed, by placing terminal patients on a scale, that at the time of their death there was a measurable decrease in weight. He drew the conclusion that the variance could only be explained by the departing of the patient's soul, something confirmed for him by the fact that a dying dog had no such weight loss.

There was a movie titled "21 grams" starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts in 2003, based upon this hypothesis.

The soul is the immaterial part of us that survives beyond the death of our bodies. Christians believe it belongs to God and possesses immortality. It is the core of our being... who we are. It is different than our spirit, which is our controlling influence... the center of our emotions and source of our passions. Many think of the soul and the spirit as being one and the same. The Bible says they are separate and different (Hebrews 4:12 ).

People who have had "out of body" experiences have stated that their sense of being in that state was contained within an orb connected to their body by a silver cord. Some practitioners of "astral projection" also report this, stating that they felt that if the cord was broken that the body would physically die and they would be unable to return to it. There is Biblical support regarding this as well in Ecclesiastes 12:6 - "Remember Him (God) before the silver cord is broken and the golden bowl is crushed..."

Yes they have learnt so much from the Pagans, but all living creation has an"essence" or soul, the trees have, the rocks have(magnetic fields) animals have, science cannot answer as it requires a certain amount of inner sense to comprehend, actually the Catholic chuch only allowed women to have souls from the early 1600's,nice of them huh?
The essence of soul cannot be find in scripture,as you cannot truly rely on something that has so many inconsistances,so as a Pagan I go by instinct and deep meditations to achieve a sort of higher level which allows you to connect with your essence directly, you don't need a book or a priest, your own church or place of worship inhabits your own pysche and "mind"......be a beautiful soul..be yourself

Christians say a lot of things...!!! And if you ask them to prove any of it they'll tell you that requiring proof is silly.

I say Christians are silly.....as are all people who feel the need to believe in souls and other such nonsense.

Some people say that UFO's regularly visit them in the night and probe them....how do they "know"?! Simple...because if you're the sort of person who doesn't need proof then frankly you can believe whatever the heck you want to believe and say that you "know" it's true.

By "soul" they mean an undying, formless entity which describes "you" as a person. (your memories, likes, dislikes etc).

MAJESTIC: Majestically STUPID more like. Do you really need me to show you all the evidence that proves the existence of AIR!!!??? What a MONUMENTALLY stupid comment.
I guess the fact you can't see gravity makes that one a "take it on faith" force too yeah....you f-ing ejit! Go away a get a brain...

What exactly do you think a soul is? What properties does it have? What part of 'you' resides in the soul?

If it's postulated that consciousness, or awareness, or sense of self resides in the soul, it's difficult to see how this can be reconciled with the complete oblivion which accompanies general anaesthesia. How could a straightforward chemical, injected into the bloodstream, anaesthetise a soul so that it effectively ceases to exist during this time? If consciousness, in the form of a soul, were some kind of supernatural faculty, it would seem implausible that it could be completely disabled by a chemical.

How about some of the other things which we regard as essential parts of what makes a person what they are? How about love, compassion, reason, empathy, memory, conscious thought, character, 'spirituality' and so on? Well, there is really no plausible doubt that all these things are properties of the physical brain - We can alter all of these properties very simply with alcohol or other drugs, and observe how they change in people who have suffered significant brain damage. Previously placid people become uncontrollably violent, intelligent people become imbeciles, and so on. Stimulate the brain artificially, and the subject reports corresponding mental activity, e.g. 'religious experiences'. We can see from brain research that all these things - thought, emotion, sensation, character traits and so on - are correlated with activity in the brain, and some things can be identified with specific areas of the brain.

So, if all these faculties and characteristics of what we regard as the 'person' reside in the physical brain, as seems to be undeniably the case, and they all cease when the person dies, then what is left to be attributed to a 'soul'? As far as I can ascertain: Nothing. If there is no part of us that can continue after death, then there is no 'afterlife'... and if there is no afterlife, then most of religion is null and void.

Soul comes from the French Seule, meaning self. I'm 100% positive that myself exists.
