Now heres the thing, is it a ring, or is it a labret stud? These can cause totally different answers!
Either way, go back to the piercer and ask for them to replace the jewelry with what you would like.
If you are using a ring, then there should be a small ball inbetween the two sides of the ring. Try pushing or pulling gently at the ball its self to get it to release. Again, best thing to do is go to the piercer.
If you have a stud, trust me i know its hard to get the ball off of the stud. I tried everything and then went back to the piercer and he simply unscrewed it with ease.

The original ring used for lip piercings is a "cbr" which has a ring that reaches to a ball in the middle. This ring is installed and removed by a special set of pliers, used by most reputable piercers.

I personally would suggest you sterilize the jewelry you would like to replace your cbr with, take it to the place where you got pierced, and ask the piercer first:
1) if it safe to remove the jewelry at this time,
2) if it IS, then to please remove the cbr and install your personal jewelry.

Make sure the jewelry is completely sterilized and set in alcohol for a few before installing, otherwise you're begging for infection.

Don't forget to tip your piercer handsomely!!! This will bring you points in the future!

You can absolutely go to a piercer and they will pop whatever you have in your mouth out in seconds and slip in the new item that you would like in its place. No fuss no muss and maybe a small fee because their time is expensive and they will have to resterilize any equipment they use to get the jewlery out.
However, I don't enjoy the idea of having to run to get help in order to simply change my jewlery. If you have the usual side of the lip piercing with a captive bead hoop in it, you can try working a fingernail between the bead and the hoop to get the bead to pop out. If that doesnt work you can find a pair of needlenose pliers and put the pointy ends inside the hoop. Put your finger over the end of the pliers to make sure the hoop doesnt spring off. Then slowly open the pliers and the bead should drop out after just a bit of pressure. You can count on the bead to go leaping off into space or down the drain of the sink or running across the nearest tile floor, so try to be somplace that you will be able to recover it or have a friend's hand waiting under your mouth to catch the thing. This technique will also work to enlarge the opening of the hoop if you open the pliers farther. I like to do this to make getting the hoops out of my lip easier. it does take some practice bending them back into shape so the bead fits again, but it saves aggravating your piercing while youre trying to change its jewlery.
If you have a labret stud that is stuck, see if you can find a pair of latex gloves. Often slapping a pair on will give your fingers enough grip to hold the stud steady and twist the ball. if you cant get it yourself and have a friend who will stick their hands in your mouth with gloves give that a try. Upon failing this it's really easier to go to a piercer and have them change it.
But since i'm just THAT stubborn I have discovered a way to get out of my labret stud at home. (it is always stuck) If you have a comfortably fitting labret stud you should be able to push it gently to get some of the bar to show on the outside of your mouth. If you have enough of this bar showing to grab with your lovely needlenose pliers, grab it and clamp down. Then use a second pair of pliers to rotate the ball in the correct direction to get it off. This is not the easiest way in the world but it hasnt failed me yet.
If you have some jewlery other than one of these two items you need to have your piercer change it for you (ex an angel's kiss or vertical labret) and have them make sure the new jewlery you have in mind is right for your piercing.
While youre busy trying to get your jewlery out be mindful of how your piercing is doing. if its getting sore or hot leave it alone for a while. It has had enough fooling around for the time being. Give it a nice gentle clean and let it rest. If after a couple of tries you still cant get the jewlery out go to a piercer. There's nothing wrong with going to get help to get unstuck!

Go to the place that put it in, they have a tool to separate the ring.
