it was probably a corolla S or XR-S, 4 door sedan, about the same size a general profile of the WRX, and somewhat sporty look.

Louis G has the closest answer of all of these. the Celica GT-4 was the rally car to compete with the STI and EVO. It was sold in the US under the name All-Trac Turbo and was discontinued in the US after 1993; It was called the GT-4 elsewhere and was discontinued after the 1999 model year. However, it had a sporty coupe layout instead of the compact sedan layout of the WRX or EVO. Still, it's the only model that was sold to the masses that competed directly with the WRX and EVO.

Toyota did make a corolla for the WRC Rally Racing. There are no Toyota cars that you can buy that look like a Subaru WRX STI.

Scion tC- a two door coupe with a bigger engine, more standard equipment than the Celica and alot more options available from the dealer and start at only $17,580 and best of all it's still a Toyota

The only car I know that is close to the STI is the Mistubishi Lancer EVO. If it was in fact a Toyota, I would have to guess that it was custom designed.

Perhaps an older Celica GT-4 it was a turbo AWD model I believe. It has not been produced for more than 15 years now.

I was going to say a Matrix XR-S with AWD. That's a pretty sporty AWD wagon. I just looked though and it looks like the discontinued the XR-S, but maybe you could find a used one? The XR and standard Matrix are also available with AWD but they don't have a lot of power. They have enough, but not a lot.
