You have to know about all the treaties that date back to the mid 1800s to understand how everyone got pulled in. Germany was actually looking for a fight prior to the beginning of the war and because of a treaty with Austro-Hungary they had the "cause". The excuse for war was the assassination of ArchDuke Ferdinand who no one even liked but it gave legitmacy to going to war so there it went

In 1914 the nations of Europe were linked by a patchwork of alliances. Austria declared war on Serbia because of the assassination of the Austrian emperor in Serbia. The Russians had pledged to support Serbia and declared war on Austria. The Germans meanwhile had pledged to support Austria but rather than invade Russia invaded Russia's ally France instead. Unfortunately in order to get to France the Germans overran Belgium whose neutrality Britain had guaranteed. Within a few months most of the nations of Europe had been dragged into the Austro-Serbian war

Germany got involved after a Serbian seperatist assianated Austrian Arch Duke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. The Austrian empire wanted to extradite the guy, but Serbia said no.
Due to entangling alliances (one country promising to join another if they go to war) it went something like this. Austria went to fight Serbia who fought back and had an alliance with Russia. Germany had an alliance aganist Russia with Austria so they hopped in. France and Britain had an alliance against Germany so they hopped in.
Germany superior military planning using a "swinging gate" manuever almost took Paris and led to most of the trench warfare occuring in the French countryside ravishing the country.
Upon victory, French rage at the destruction and desire for reparations, to have Germany pay for the rebuilding of its country at the Treaty of Versailles. Led to unrealistic demands placed upon the german gov't. In order to meet the payment schedule they printed additional currency leading to hyper inflation and a failed German economy. The unrest this caused led to Hitler being elected chancellor and declaring emergency powers, then WWII, etc. etc.

Another homework question??
By the way it was PRUSSIA and the Associated German States and Duchy's,
To enlarge Kaiser Wilhelm II Empire, he was always jealous of his Aunt, Queen Victoria's Empire, and felt Prussia really deserved a bigger slice of the cake, so he joined forces with Emperor Franz Josef of Austro-Hungaria.
And the rest as they say is History.
