Catholics: How come no one nominates an American Catholic for Pope?

Pope JP, II, said no Pope would ever be selected from America.

America has saints but they are called, Native Americans.

Popes tend not to come from dominant cultures, when they have, it has usually been a bad thing. Preference always goes to confessors and people who could have been martyrs. Americans live too easy a life to lead a billion people in hardship. The exception of course is the bias toward nominating Italians, since of course the Pope is the bishop of the Church at Rome.

American Catholics are considered very liberal in the world catholic community. The U.S. is also very unimportant as veiwed in the Catholic perspective. The country is overwhelmingly protestant-christian. The ability to convert is limited, catholic bishops play a far less important role within the country as a whole. There would be no real upside for an American Pope. Whereas a Latin American - African - Asian Pope would possibly bring more converts. The European Bishops are powerful men in their diocese, and far less liberal. So these men make much more attractive men. *Side Note* Italians are upset about no Italian pope in a long time and so the Italian bloc may be against anyone not of an Italian Diocese.
