Eventually, He would have had then eat it. He could have picked any tree. The point of forbidding a certain tree was to show He had a right to rule Adam & Eve. It was not about knowing good from evil. After all, nothing could harm them there in the Garden.

the garden of Eden is a myth. just like all myths they don't tell facts they tell truths. second of all, god did not make the world or the universe for that matter. if God! is all perfect and eternal, then by definition, everything he makes has to be perfect and eternal! yet nothing in this world or this universe is perfect or eternal. the truth behind Adam and eve myth is that a divided mind will not live in peace. if you are conflicted and most people are!! then you can not live in peace or for ever. A mind in conflict is in war with it self. may that be christian, atheist, Hindu, or other wise.
heaven or hell, good or bad, right or wrong, black or white. the split mind makes all this thing real onto it self so as to separate it self from others and make it self more special (supirior). e.g we are right! they are wrong, we are christian they are atheist, and so forth. the truth is that separation is an illusion. a way to justify our cruillty to others. science is finding this out through experimentation.( check out quantum physics) that this thing we call our lives are not real, and all energy is in contact with the whole. we are we cloud in a sky of energy . the only part of you that is real is your spirit, and that is eternal and never separate from the endless love of god. there is no hell, except in humanities imagination the more gentle you are with yourself, with others, strangers and known, loved ones, pets, plants the better you feel. that's because, you are this total love that you feel. the way to be more you is to be more loving,
you may think that this has nothing to do with the question but it has everything to do with it.this myth was put together by a split minded person not god. and is believed by split mindedness.

God, knowing all things, anticipated that Adam and Eve would indeed partake of the fruit. In some doing, God allowed his plan of salvation to come about. Adam (man) now had to live by faith, work by the sweat of his brow, and also children could be born into the world. Adam and Eve partaking of the fruit allowed all of us to eventually be born to the earth. That would not have happened otherwise.
