My mum used to do this with me....and it made me love long journeys. What you do is, buy lots of little gifts (maybe a colouring book, a keyring, etc...) and wrap them up. Then every hour or so give the child another little present. by the time they get bored with one it will be time for another.
I wouldn't give them sweets as present though. Just fun little things to amuse.

Like i said my mum used to do it with me and i loved it!

A lot of the ideas you've been getting from people are good, so I won't repeat them. You might also want to bring Pull-Ups and have your child wear them, just in case. Little kids have a way of not knowing they need to use the bathroom until they need to use the bathroom RIGHT THAT SECOND, and it will be easier for you and less stressful for your child if an accident won't cause a major catastrophe.

A laptop/portable DVD player will be a huge relief for you. Will keep the child entertained and quiet. Also some delicious snacks they like will help. Their favorite blanket/pillow/teddy bear will help them when they want to sleep, too.

Lots of little handheld games, snacks, coloring books, things of that source. And if that doesn't work-Nyquil. Jusst kidding don't use nyquil. But the other stuff should work
