Most of it has to do with individual personality and socailizing early on for whether it will get along with kids/other animal.
Shih tzus are more stubborn. Mini schauzers are more energetic and need more exercise. Both are affectionate and good with children. Shih tzus are PROBABLY more affectionate. Shih tzus need less upkeep in terms of exercise.

my personal experience with a mini schnauzer was he ignored cats (but mild curiosity) and even was fine with rabbits the family had.
the shih tzu plays with the cat, chases, but not mean or to hurt him at all. Shih tzu wants to be near your side more.
They seem to bark equally.
I dont own either, just know them from friends.

I have owned a Shih Tzu and I now own a Mini Schnauzer. I can say they are about equal in every way except grooming. A Schnauzer does need grooming, but not to the extent of the Shih Tzu. I have seen a lot of people let the grooming go ending up with matted hair that then has to be shaved and a Shih Tzu is not supposed to be shaved, where as the body of a Schnauzer is clipped very short and much easier to maintain... less expensive also.

I would go with the schnauzer. My mom's friend has one and it's really loving and is great with her cat. I know another lady that has a shih tzu and it's pretty protective and only likes her. It also has long hair that requires daily brushing and frequent trips to the groomers. The shnauer requires grooming if it's not naturally short haired, but it is just shaving it down and trimming it's face and legs. My suggestion though is not to get either one. I had to get a small dog due to my circumstances and got a jack russell. I excersice her regularly and everyone says that she seems quite calm for a jack. Good luck.

I have a 7 month old Shih Tzu who is the love of my life, as far as dogs go! She is pretty much full grown now at 14.5 pounds. She was soooo easy to potty train. I am retired and home all day so was able to work with her without a crate. She has slept in bed with me from day one, (I brought her home at 3 months old) and has had very few accidents in the house. She was raised with kids so is great with the grandkids who are 1 and 7. I think she likes kids better than adults!! My girlfriend has a Shih Tzu (who I fell in love with and why I wanted one) and her mother has one and her in-laws have one. They are wonderful pets that don't require a lot of exercise (although we walk 3 times a day more for me than her) and we play ball in the house on rainy days. I get her groomed every 5-6 weeks and keep her hair short. I wash her face and brush her nearly every day. I love her!! If you have any further questions about Shih Tzu's you can email me.

I have always had schnauzers around.. (currently live with 2 standards) .. I love them to death.. (they are not my favorite breed overall, but I still love them) However, training is VERY important.. they are the dogs that think like humans (this is not just an old wives tale, they were bred to be independent and not have people tell them what to do). Kids are iffy. if you get it from a puppy and socialize it around kids it will be great, if you get an adult, you'll have to wait and see.. I've never been fond of Shi tzu's .. the one's i've known have been yappy little dogs.. but, I'm sure that has more to do with the owners than the breed..
Good Luck with whichever you choose.

Okay, I have been closely around both of these breeds of dogs and they are both so much fun. My mom currently has a mini schnauzer and she is just a ball of fire (her name is Diva), but she is not the best with children. Usually, schnauzer are very territorial with their families and are very talkative. If the dog was to grow up with kids or other dogs it would be okay, but when intorduced later in life it may not go over so well. Shih-tzu are very loving dogs and from my experience are hyper-active, but most wouldn't hurt a fly. But like any dog breed it is unsure what you are going to get until you bring it home. They are similar to humans...everyone has its own personality. My biggest advice to you would be to intorduce your dog to many people and animals as a pup and that should socialize him/her enough to be okay with others along with age. But overall, both breeds are great.

Both are cute and small breeds. But schnauzers are very curious, can be nippy, high energy and very vocal dogs. I think the **** tzu is more suitable for family living given they are trained around kids and the kids are given proper guidelines for dealing with any animal.

in my opinion schnauzers are awesome, i had mine for 3 years.schnauzers are great with kids their nature is to be very loving , and to be good guard dogs. but don't worry their not like chihuahuas!! but be aware they are very stubborn, but all the love they give makes up for it! Also be aware that they must be groomed every 1month to 1month 1/2. good luck choosing!
