It's a metaphor from a shepherdnig culture, unfortunately 21st century web communities weren't the intended audience! I suppose we could revise it and say "The LORD is my ISP I shall not be randomly disconnected" or "The LORD is my cell phone tower, he can hear me now."

Somehow it lacks that poetic feel, though, doesn't it?

Better to take the existing metaphors and ask how they break down at some point. True, there is gullibility and group-think in ALL communities. This is why we have many metaphors: God is also my captain and I must control the sails on my own. He is the rock who prepares me for war, but I fight under my own power. He is Father - but He is also Mother and still he is the least of these. He is all powerful and triumphant and yet he hangs upon an artificial tree broken and dying.

The richness of metaphor and mythology in Christianity is hardly devalued by the mere fact that we are normal humans. And even devoid of all truth claims that system is a lavish banquet compared to the thin postmodern gruel of "I'm too smart for that."

I am very comfortable being a sheep for God and following Him. I am not comfortable following man or allowing man to be my shepherd

I read a book a few years back that a man wrote regarding his experience with rasieing sheep and how he related it to the 23rd paslm....

his first point was the difficulty of sheep...they are so dumb...
this has to be just right...that has to be just right..they can't do or follow, etc..all sorts of things had to be done by the shepard to keep these strange creatures alive and well.....

it was a very good book...learned a lot about sheep that I did not know...and a very indepth study of the 23rd pslam and its meaning....

yes...mankind is very much like a herd of sheep.....
