Sometimes, I use a knife to cut my meat.

Other times, I just cut my food with a fork, if I can.

Are there times when the fork-only method is innappropriate?

You can "divide" a cooked vegetable (potato, carrot, etc.) with a fork to reduce it more to a size which will fit in your mouth and you can chew without making it a "spectator sport" ..

In the US, you're not expected to use your knife on food soft enough to be cut with a fork (and that goes for all courses, not just desert.) In countries where one keeps the fork in the left hand, it might be simpler to use your knife always.

Why would it be? Arbitrary and artificial "etiquette" is pretty much silly and useless.
