hmmm the time before you get married is your engagement. even if you don't have a "formal" engagement.

You do not HAVE to be engaged. It is a tradition but it all depends on your personal views.
Being engaged is like a trial marriage period. You start acting like a really serious faithful couple and plan the marriage. It also helps you to decide whether or not you want to be with this other person for the rest of your life.
It can be a very romantic step in your relationship but don't ever feel like you have to do it in order to have a successful marriage. Many people get married without being engaged.
Marriage is a very serious step, please make sure you have thought it through a lot before you jump into it. Especially before you have children. They are always the ones who get hurt the most in a failed marriage
GOOD LUCK..

There are no set-in-stone rules that say you have to be engaged. But, if you think about it....you really are engaged because you are "promised" to the other person for marriage. I think your question should be "do I need an engagement ring before I get married"...and the answer is NO.

You can get married the second you decide to if you want- it's a free country. People just tend to have engagements when they're planning big weddings because if you don't have engagements, you miss out on some of the preliminary fun, like bachelor/bachelorette parties, bridal showers, etc. But if none of that matters to you, just go ahead and elope. No big deal.

Engagement is a public declaration of your intent to marry.
If you have made wedding plans, then you are engaged! Simple!! You don't need to be formally engaged to gt married, though. you don't need a ring, or put a notice in the paper, or anything. Just set a date and time, and get married! Until you are legally hitched, and have agreed to be totally faithful to only each other, and have agreed to marry each other, you are, in fact, engaged!!

Why would you not be engaged first before you get married? Some people just have a hunch to get married w/o an engagement.

There's no law saying you need to be engaged but its just the natural step - the engagement is a promise to get married and personally can't see how you can have one without the other
a girl should have an engagement ring then wedding ring then eternity ring he he

Congratulations. The moment you guys decided you are going to get married, you are engaged. So mark that date down as the day of your engagement. Now you can go get married any time. Make sure you look up your local laws about marriage licenses.

You don't have to be engaged before you get married. It is recommended that you do. After an engagement, the are some steps that are taken to make sure the couple knows that was the right decision for both of them. Pre-marital counseling....etc.

Engaged is just a term used when two people know they are getting married soon.... if you and your "other" already know you are getting married, you are "technically" already engaged in a sense.... if one person has asked the other to marry them and they say "yes"... you are engaged... the other stuff like newspaper announcements and showers are just "stuff" that comes with it... but you dont need all of that formality....

There is no law saying that you must be engaged however some states do have a waiting period from the time you get your marriage license till the time you can get married.
