Many wild animals are cute and cuddly but they cannot be domesticated. Meaning that the basic nature of the animal, while it can be controlled to a point cannot be erraticated. Their basic nature will, at some point, show itself. Many squirrels will learn to take nuts from you and allow you to hand feed them. They will though, bite you if you decide one day to try and pet it. It is their nature, their survival instinct. Some people try to domesticate large cats or bears. We see what happens, their basic nature prevails, they attack and then they are destroyed because of it. Dogs are domesticated but it took generations to do so and if left to the wild, as in left to roam free, their basic survival instinct will take over, they become wild, roam and hunt in packs and will attack to save themselves.

Squirrels always appear in the parks runing ups and downs in pine or other kind of trees. They look cute and cuddly sometimes. However, you don't see any resident keep a squirrel as a pet. You don't see them sell in pet shop. That's why they are classified as wild animals.

1. Because they're wild
2. Because they're animals.
I agree with the cute part. Cuddly, not so much. I take lots of squirrel photos, so I must agree with you.
I started feeding the birds last spring, and ended up buying squirrel food for "Mr. Squirrel" and his brethren. Mr. Squirrel comes right up to the sliding door while the cats are going ballistic and "asks" for food if I haven't fed him yet. Very cute, although the cats seem to have a different perspective.

Wild and cute are not opposites.
Wild and tame are opposites.
A tame and yet repulsive animal is totally possible. Some people have pet spiders for example.

No doubt they are adorable, but they run free and should never be domesticated. Their habitat is out in open land. That's why they're considered wild animals.

They live undomesticated in the wild. Hence, they are wild animals.
