I have two nephews that live with me that are 3 and 4. Now i know that no two kids are alike but i am concerned about my three year old nephews speaking skills. I am not concerned about the 4 year old where as he speaks in full sentences. However my other nephew cannot pronounce words right now matter how many times we practice and for example he fell off his bike in the grass and when my husband asked him what happened he only could say " bike grass" which of course my husband couldnt really understand what he meant. Could there be something wrong or am i worrying over nothing?

It sounds to me like he could have some articulations problems. This can be due to poor muscle tone in the mouth, hearing issues....it would be best to be checked out. 2 of my boys started speech therapy when they were only 2....and are still receiving it and they are 8 and 10. They have made a lot of progress...and their only problem was the articulation. You should check with the Educational Service Center for your county. They will be able to assess him for speech problems...and make sure you get his hearing checked by an audiologist. That is always the 1st step. Oh, and the assessment through the county is free of charge, as is any resulting therapy if he's found to have the need. Good luck.

I would have him checked out by and ENT & Audiologist first to address hearing issues. It could be as simple as a little fluid in his ears requiring tubes. From the little you said, it seems like he is missing his "fillers." Fillers are the little words like in, a, the, etc. After he sees the audiologist and if he checks out good with fine hearing, take him to a speech pathologist for evaluation. When was he 3?

My son will be 3 on monday. He gets speech (and a few other services). He has PE Tubes for fluid, weak oral muscles, puts 2 to 3 words together, and not many people understand him, including his special ed teacher.

I wouldn't really say this is something to be worried about, but something to be addressed NOW, not in a few months, or a year. The earlier any problem is caught and worked with, the better the outcome.

To alleviate your worries, get a hold of your public nursing services in your county and ask about a speech evaluation for your nephew. This is a free-of-charge service and if necessary the speech therapist will come right to your home. These services will continue once he starts school and he will be immediately referred to speech therapy through the school. Sometimes they just are not getting things quite right and need some professional help. My daughter got speech therapy when she was 2 and within 6 months she was up to speed and discharged from the services. It was well worth the time and effort to have her evaluated and get the help that I wasn't trained to give her. Give it a try.

Your nephew should be checked out. It is up to the mother to do this of course. She should have been getting him his development checks were this would have been picked up.

It could well be that his older brother is speaking for him it is not uncommon for this to happen as they are so close in age.

This is a common problem with the younger of 2 children who are close in age. The problem is that the older child "speaks" for the younger child most of the time. For instance, the parent asks the younger, "What do you want to drink?" The older child, who thinks he knows what his little brother wants says, "Chocolate milk". The younger child is satisfied with whatever answer is given for him, and is used to being lead by the older child. So the younger one doesn't have to learn to speak well.

I would bring it up during the next visit to the pediatrician, and see what he/she recommends.

my son's ped. told me that if he (the Dr.) couldn't understand my son at the age of three we might need to look at getting some speech therapy, you might want to consider that especially for the long run, my cousin had major speech impediment and they (my aunt) did not take him to a speech therapist and he still to this day talks funny.
