Animal studies have revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus, however, there are no adequate studies in pregnant women OR animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus.
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking metronidazole,
* tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking metronidazole, call your doctor.(MedlinePlus)
Metronidazole has also been used in women to prevent preterm birth associated with bacterial vaginosis, amongst other risk factors including the presence of cervicovaginal fetal fibronectin (fFN). A randomised controlled trial demonstrated that metronidazole was ineffective in preventing preterm delivery in high-risk pregnant women and, conversely, the incidence of preterm delivery was actually higher in women treated with metronidazole.
Lamont has argued that Metronidazole is not the right antibiotic to administer in these circumstances and was often administered too late to be of use. Clindamycin administered early in the second trimester to women who test positive for bacterial vaginosis seems to be more effective. (Wikipedia)

There are concerns about virtually every drug taken in the first trimester because of the risk of liability and law suits if anything should be wrong with the baby. I don't think there are any drugs including nicotine and alcohol that are considered acceptable early on. But at 32 weeks you have a fairly well formed person already. I would say go ahead if this were my wife and baby.

There are some concerns about it up to 16 or 18 weeks, but it's considered pretty safe in the last half of pregnancy.

Did you tell the vet she might be pregnant? If so, then the vet took this into consideration when prescribing a medication. If not, get on the phone to a vet, ANY vet, and ask them.
