to work at any corporate entity of large size, you need a four-year degree, preferrably in a field related to journalism, writing, and/or research. It also helps to have done an internship at a major news outlet.
to work at a small, independent news outlet, you need to be able to right well (and communicate well, if you're into radio/TV journalism). But without the degree, you can't move up to a larger (and better-paying) outlet, even if you can write rings around a college grad. Without a degree, don't expect to make enough to pay for rent, car payments, gasoline and food, unless you have a better-paid spouse.
