In the manual with my new toaster (Kitchen Gourmet 2-slice toaster), there is a warning that the product contains lead and you should "wash hands after use." More confusing, there is a strip of white paper over the warning, so the warning is visible through the paper but is clearly meant to have been blocked out. Since this product was made in China, and since there has been news lately about Chinese-made products containing lead, I don't know whether to consider this toaster safe to use. I have no way to know whether the paper-over thing means "this warning does not apply" or "we think this warning looks bad." In addition, I don't know the implications of lead in a toaster. If it is only the exterior paint, presumably the toast would be ok? On the other hand, if there is lead somewhere that may contaminate the food, there is definitely a problem. On a web search I did not see recalls for this particular product. How safe is this toaster?

The lead in the toaster is most likely just very small amounts in the cord, plug, or circuit boards. It is completely safe to use, and your toast will not be contaminated at all.

Most toasters have metal inside to toast the toast no lead there, most likely the lead is in another location no where near where your bread is going.

Myself, I'd replace it. How expensive can it be? I'd just look at it as cheap insurance. It would even be cheap just for the peace of mind. Sometimes protective paper or plastic strips are put over labels to protect them from scratching during shipping. Just because there is something over it doesn't mean it was cancelled. If it were cancelled it would probably have been removed.

You could never be too sure. I would be skeptical just as you and no matter what, this is your health you are talking about. I would say that it is the exterior but that doesn't mean there are some amounts on the inside as well. I wouldn't take some chances and pay the medical price later!
