He should be ready now but are you??? Articles you need are:
1. shower curtain for the floor
2.washable wall coverings
3.agile enough to duck and grab a bowl at the same time.
4.a very good sense of humor
5. a good mop
Have fun!

Give him a spoon to play with at meal times. My son started spoon feeding at 12 months, albeit very messy. He was about 15 months before he could eat (somewhat) neatly. Then again, there are some kids who don't until the age of 2 or older. It all depends on the kid. For now, just put drop clothes under the highchair and let him try it out.

My son started to eat properly with a spoon when he was 2 years old. He has developmental delays, so I do not have any idea if 2 years old is the average age. We taught him with a mirror. We would sit him at the breakfast table with the bowl of cereal and a regular spoon. We put the mirror in front of him so he could see his mouth. I held his hand with the spoon and helped him "scoop and eat". Within a week, he was a pro. Now if I put a plate in front of him, he won't touch his food unless he has a spoon! It's so cute! My daughter is 16 months old. She will eat with a spoon, but not properly. She is very messy with it!

There is no right or wrong time, as every baby is unique in development. Just keep giving him a spoon to try. At first he will be very awkward and may even reject the implement. As he sees you and the others in the family using one, however, he will want to follow suit.
Just offer it to him, it's never too early for a spoon, then stand back and be prepared to do a lot of floor cleaning!
Good luck!

Just give him a spoon and leave him to it! Be prepared for some mess but there is no reason why he can't be feeding himself soon.

My son was feeding himself from about 10 months, he would get in a right mess but by the time he was 13 months he was fine! He learnt really quick and was so independant he wouldn't allow us to help him anyway!

He could expertly eat a yoghurt from the tub, missing nothing, very young! He gets complitmented on his eating manners a lot! Just let him get on with it, he will find a way!

When he was about 16 months my mother gave him an orange, segmented and in a bowl for him to eat with his fingers. He toddled of and got a toy brick and tried to use it to pick up the pieces of orange. Typical cave man instincts - he needed a tool for the job so went and found one to improvise!

Not meaning to be rude but I'm not sure why you say "start letting". I have always placed a spoon and fork on my children's highchair from a very young age. When they were ready to try and use it they did.

My daughter who is now 15 months regularly uses her spoon and is capable of stabbing certain items with her fork. With both my children I often found that letting them have the spoon/fork would encourage them to eat. I often cut sandwiches into small squares and my daughter will eat much more because she is so engrossed in using a fork. It will be messy but just go for it and remember to laugh. This stage of childhood is fun to watch.

Good luck!

That would really be for you to decide, obviously hand eye coordination develops through different types of play however just being able to put different shaped blocks into holes isn't going to mean that he can operate small implements like a knife and fork. Give him some playdoh wth some tools and watch how he copes with the cutting and shaping side of thing. You can only really observe him because children develop at different stages, some are ready quicker than others and some may take far far longer. I wish you and your wallpaper much luck!!!

I would do it now, i gave my baby a spoon to hold while i fed him at about 6 months....he used to try to get the food in his mouth too...it was very messy but he has been feeding himself since he was 1 yr. I put a plastic sheet under the highchair and let him get on with it...be prepared for a mess but your baby will soon get the hang of it.

now is the time. give him a baby spoon every time you feed him - even if he' only eating finger foods. after a couple of weeks, begin putting the spoon in his hand correctly. you'll need to do this for a couple of months. he will eventually get the hang of it. it will take a while though.

Now would be a good time. Sit him in his chair with a plastic mat under him and give him things in his bowl that he can pick up without too much trouble until he masters the art then just let him go for it. He will get tidier in time (that is until he reaches his teens then he will go back wards, I know I have 6 boys of my own). Good luck and make the most of him while he is still young enough to listen and do what is asked of him. I would not change any of mine for the world.
