but I'm 26 and still speak gibberish!
seriously its fine you'll probably find one day he'll turn around and say " can I have a drink Mummy"
As long as he still makes eye contact and responds to you as he normally would then he's being a very typical boy and waiting for something worth saying ;)
If you really are concerned call your health visitor

You don't hold a baby near a bowl of soup and expect it to not end up on the walls. That is silly. You don't give a baby medication while a bowl of hot liquid is within reach. That is dangerous. You don't pop a baby on the butt. Not for actual mischief, and not for YOUR mistakes, which is what this was. That is abuse. You don't scare a baby on purpose. That is abuse. You don't swing a baby around. That is abuse. You don't yell at a baby. That is ALSO abuse. It's very good that you are taking parenting classes, but you also need personal professional help, and you need to get your baby somewhere safe, where you are NOT even able to be alone with him, until you learn how to deal with these things.

My daughter is 18 months old and only said mamma about a month ago. She would say a few other words, most of it gibberish. I read that boys are supposed to be better at physical things and the speech comes a bit later, with girls its the opposite.
My 1st daughter started chatting just after a year, and has never stopped. My 18month old has a dummy, after i stopped giving to her as much, the words started coming out.
Don't worry, before long you won't be able to shut him up!
Hope it offers some help.

Boys tend to develope at a faster rate in pysical development and he is walking that is good. He is talking what we call jargalling so do not worry he is ok and yes normal.
When he chats chat back to him so he gets the idea that you are talking and it will come. His "gibberish" is normal and he is talking his way.

my son was the same way. he was walking and everything else, but only said mama as part of his gibberish, not because he knew what it was. he is now 19 months, and he has quite a few words! just give him some time. he will learn.

My son was the same. He is 6 years old now and then, when he was 3 years old and still had little to no words coming out of his mouth, I took him to an ear, nose and throat doctor who inserted eartubes in his ears, due to so many earinfections when younger. My son couldn't hear me well as a toddler, therefore, couldn't repeat the words! Bring him to an Ear Nose and Throat doctor. I waited too long, although, now, he is okay!

Stop worrying your baby is doing just fine...he will talk when he is ready to but if you are really concerned you could have doc check his hearing. The gibberish is the beginnings of him talking. My son did everything except talk.. he was three years before he spoke...he is now 30 yrs runs his own business and talks forever :)

Totally! Mine 18 months says it when it suits him! His fav word is still Daaaa whilst pointing! He's getting there though - does know a few words, just too lazy to say them really! Don't worry - they all develop differently, and boys are slower most people reckon.

Yes, it's fine. Babies do things at different rates. The key 'target' for speech is that he knows 30 words by the time he is two.
