Do they emit a certain smell once they have ringworms? And how did they get this in the first place? And preventive measures, please!

Ringworm is a fungal disease, it has nothing to do with worms. Typically there will be round, hairless, scaly patches on the skin, but your vet can confirm it with the use of black light. It can spread to humans, so you need to treat your cat immediately.
When my cat had it, our vet gave us a special anti-fungal shampoo. The cat hated it, but it had to be done. The vet also said to rub on some anti fungal "human" cream (the stuff you use for athlete's foot), which helped.
Cats get it from other cats, not much you can do about it. I don't think it's life threatening, but your cats could loose a lot of hair if it spreads, but it will grow back. Once they have had it, they're usually immune to it.

They won't have a smell. And no, they won't die.

Ringworm can resolve itself if left untreated, but it would take about 4 months.

They can get it from another cat, any animal with ringworm, or from a human who has it. It's not a worm, it's a fungus that lives on and just under the surface of the skin. DO NOT SCRUB at the area, you'll only spread it wider.

It's treated with a cream or liquid (or a dip but that stinks to high heaven!). Ordinary 4% miconazole can be gotten from a pharmacy or Walgreens for $8 a tube and smeared on the spot (especially the edges of the spot) two or three times a day. That will kill the fungus in about 2-3 weeks for a cat, longer for a human. The miconazole is generic (it's in the yeast infection part of the medicine area), the brand name would be Monistat 3. Works pretty good too, I used it last year on our cat.

Ringworm is a fungal issue that shows on the skin of the cat, it is in a red circle located somewere on the cats body. A cat, dog,or human gets it when you touch or rub against a certain bacteria. The cat ,dog ,or human will not die from ringworm luckilly, and vetrenarians have special antidotes for it. Ringworm does not give of a certain smell or anything, and it does not hurt the cat. ou acctually can not prevent ringworm, though, it is a bacteria that can be located anywere in the house. But if you use antibacterial wipes it could slow down the chances of you or your cat to get ringworm.
