It varies with breeds. Some breeds are very stoic and don't show much if they are injured.
Other breeds are very sensitive and whine and make it very obvious what is hurting.
So none of us can answer for all breeds. As with humans, it's often the attitude of the individual dog as well as related to breed traits. So you have to know your own dog, and the traits of your dog's breed(s).

They generally sulk. there ears will be down, they will stay in one place or walk in a 'i dont care way' or give you the sad puppy eyes. Get your dogs favourate toy or treat and see if he runs to you if not have a look at him but dont apply to much pressure, if he hurts he could bite you and feel uncomfortable.

You mean if they are in pain or injured?
-Look for signs of limping or lameness.
-Sleeping more then usual.
-Whining
-Shaking or trembling
-Whining when touched
-Hiding
-Not eating
-Ears down
-tail down or between legs
When in doubt it is always best to call the vet or set up an appointment.

-can become aggressive if you attempt to prod or feel the injured area...

Ears go down they cower, but all you really have to do is look into their eyes they will let you know.
