I was thinking about buying a GPS and I was wondering. Can I buy it and just use it or do I have to supscribe to a monthly fee and can I just get the GPS or do I have to buy a receiver or something?

you can just buy it and use it, there are some that come with a subscription but those offer more services. I have one and all I do is plug in where I'm going and it does it for me. You will need to update the firmware once in a while with new maps, but other than that it is very useful and worth the money.

You can use it straight out of the box. You can buy updated map data (usually supplied annually) but it's not essential. The map data supplied will still work, but new road developments won't be on it.
