i've had one now for the past 4 days and i've booked myself in to see the dentist. i don't see anything wrong with the gum apart from a bit of inflamation but it's been aching for the past 4 days so i thought i should see the dentist. i was just at the dentist 3 months ago and everything was fine.. i wonder what it could be?

I brush twice a day and I floss before bed so my teeth are in pretty good shape! It's one of the bottom front ones. I think it's the gum and it might be irritated or infected and I don't eat candy so no worries there!!!

Kelli... I think you're right about the gum. It's the gum not the tooth! The gum is a little swollen and red. Going to see the dentist tomorrow morning. In the meantime I'm taking painkillers and I do mouth wash as well. Thanks! Good answer and no I don't eat pop corn!

The most common reason for toothache is decay.
If, 3 months ago your teeth were ok then there cant be any advanced decay there yet, especially as you care for your oral hygiene and dont eat sugary snacks.
There may be minor decay of the enamel on the gumline, between teeth etc thats not visible to you.
Its possible to get gum irritaions and colds also, though usually not for 4 days.
An abscess is indicated by advanced decay and severe pain.
Visiting your dentist is the only way of knowing.
Insist the dentist xrays the area to check for abscess.
Do not apply heat from a hair dryer to the area as was suggested.
A cold compress wrapped in a towel is permissible, as are painkillers in moderation.Ensure first you are within the allowed dosage and are not allergic to any ingredients.
I hope you are feeling good soon.
Paul

If there is a bit of inflammation in your gum, it could be becoz of plaque or tartar/calculus, or maybe something got stuck in between your teeth. If that's the reason then u just have to get the stuck food removed, check for any cavities and get cleaning done and u should be fine. In the meanwhile taqke some painkillers if there is too much of discomfort. i'm not sure but u may even have a pocket near the front tooth and food getting stuck there causes pain and inflammation too.
Toothaches most commonly are caused because of cavities, especially when they become deep. Then u will have to go in for a root canal. Also if u happen to bite on something very hard, the tooth can sometimes fracture and cause toothache. Toothache can also be caused because of erupting Wisdom teeth, esp if there is no space for them to come out into the mouth. In such a case the pain would be referred to the ear, or the side of the head or face too. Or do u have any fillings in your teeth which are a bit high.. if so your tooth could ache because of that too. It's best to go to the dentist again and show him where u have the ache, get some x-rays if needed and do what the dentist suggests. Also its always good to floss regularly too for the health of your teeth and gums.

Maybe there is decay inside the tooth that you cannot see.
Hopefully it is just a case where you bit down on something the wrong way and it irritated the tooth itself. This happened to me years ago. I was eating popcorn a couple of days before the toothache started. The dentist was preparing to do a root canal or filling. But I was lucky.
Try some Tylenol and if that doesn't help get some teething gel that you would use on a baby and use it until you can get to the dentist.
Good Luck!

If your tooth is sensitive to hot, cold, pressure, keeps you awake at night or wakes you up, or you have a throbbing pain that will not go away then your tooth is abscessed and you will need a root canal to remove the infected nerve. An abscess can also cause swelling.
If it is your gum around the tooth that is bothering you and not the tooth then you could have gotten something stuck in your gums that is causing it to be irritated and swollen. If you have had any popcorn then you could have a kernel stuck in your gums. This happens very often and it will cause some discomfort. Good Luck and I hope that you feel better soon.

Best thing for toothache is clove oil. Obviously the dentist is a better option but the clove oil will help whilst waiting. Puy it on a bot of cotton wool and place on the painful area.

It sounds like a cavity, but I do know you can get toothaches from grinding you teeth at night.

could be anything, just because you have healthy gums, and you brush your teeth regularly, doesnt mean that you cant cet a cavity. I have had tooth aches before because a piece of food cot lodged between my gum and my tooth without being noticed. I floss everyday, and nothing came out, but it remained there, which caused a tooth ache......

Food particals can get down between tooth base and gumline causing irritation and tooth ache sensations.
Try flossing and rinsing with mouthwashes.

You may have a tiny cavity that you can't see. Also possible that you have an abcess, which will need antibiotics.
