I went with my friend to the ER the other day and we overheard the nurses arguing over who was going to give this lady an enema. I was just wondering, when would you have to go to the ER to get an enema in the first place? Sorry if this is a stupid question I was just kind of curious.

When you haven't had a bowel movement in many days even weeks sometimes. It is a disgusting job giving an enema, and its no wonder they were arguing. Its a shot of warm water right up the butt, and an almost immediate diarrhea like spew out.

The condition is called fecal impaction. This occurs in the rectum and is usually caused by chronic constipation. Usually, by the time you have reached an impacted state, the normal treatments for constipation (increase in dietary fiber, increased fluid intake, more exercise, etc) do not help.

Treatment for impaction is enemas in most cases. An enema will soften the impaction and start it moving again. Digital manipulation of the impaction may also be necessary (digits meaning fingers). In some cases, a visit to the ER in order to stop the pain and remove the impaction are necessary. If the bowels are totally obstructed, surgery would be needed to remove the impaction.

the patient was probably there for other reasons, but part of treating her involved an enema. i seriously doubt the lady showed up just for an enema. however, if she had a seriously constipated bowel problem, i could understand that.

i think the patient did not just go the ER to have an enema,,probably her medical condition needs her to have an enema..or it cud be her physician ordered some lab test like colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy ,etc.thats y they have to clear her intestines before they perform the procedure.
