NO, not as a rule. The breed is called "The American Gentleman" for a reason! Most Bostons love to play and do need routine exercise --- a couple of walks a day and some play time. But in lines of well-bred Bostons, most are not what I would consider to be high-strung. They will run and play with the most rambunctious of dogs, but they also calm down and behave well afterward. I think the biggest problem that people have is (A) poor breeding of their dogs and (B) not providing the dog with the proper exercise.

Bostons are energetic dogs and need that exercise. However, the amount of exercise they need is small compared to most breeds (Labs, etc.) and to true terriers. Above all else they are companion dogs. They want to be with you at all times and be doing whatever you are doing. If you are cleaning out the kitchen cabinets, expect them to be there to help. But if you are sitting on the sofa watching T.V. or taking a nap, they will be right with you and calmly napping.

Another thing that happens to make people thing they are hyper is that many owners don't take the time to train their dogs to be good citizens. It doesn't take much work. Bostons are very smart and quick learners. The down side is that they learn how to avoid doing what you want if you are not persistent in your training. Overall, if you start as soon as you get the puppy (usually 10 - 12 weeks of age for Bostons, NEVER before 8 weeks) with teaching it to not jump up on people, sit on command, and a few other basics then you'll have no problem.

Ours was never out-of-control rowdy, but he was pretty energetic. He was ready to play at the drop of a hat, but not obnoxious about it. They are real clowns, and usually keep their playfulness well into old age.
I Love Bosties!

Warning, warning! Don't feed a Bostie anything with corn or soy! They will fart you out of the house.
