God has unfolded the revelation of himself slowly, over time. IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God and the Word was with God. Jesus said to baptize in the name [not names] of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. By the way, it says the same in the Hebrew and the Greek as it does in English. That God referred to himself as US reveals that there are distinct persons in the Godhead, and revelation reveals three. Hard concept to understand that one God is make up of three persons so united that they are one. Man is a three part being. Body, soul and spirit. An egg is one but has three parts. It is the mystery of God. Jesus told Philip, you have seen me so how is it you want to see the Father? I and the Father are one. Before Abraham, Jesus said, I am.

The original story, a Babylonian fable, being a pagan myth, was referring to the existence of many deities.
when that myth was modified and introduced into the first chapters of Genesis, the translators forgot that they claim there is only one god, that the reason for the plural.
the comments above are not a serious attempt at answering your question, the probable truth is that God, like modern day royalty, is referred to as being plural.

There are reverences in the Old Testament about divine beings or Sons of God.
Genesis 6:2
That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
None of the religions that came from the Old testament are polytheistic though.
So like us they have their being in God.
Romans 11:36
36For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
Ephesians 4:6
One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Also it could be some of the angels that he was talking to.
Heck he may be talking to you!
Blessings and peace to all,
all in all,
B

God the father, son and holy spirit had not even been invented at the time of Genesis.
It does smack of other gods.

well some people think he is refering to himself in plural form - as in Father, Son and Spirit.
to really get down to the nitty gritty however, you would have to learn hebrew.
