Okay, where to start...
I bought a WWII era Kar98, and am now looking to get a replacement stock for it. I took apart everything else but the thing holding me back from taking the barrel assembly out is the front bayonet lug. Instructions online say to just push the spring piece down and slide it off, but it wont budge. I noticed there was a bayonet stud further down, but when I looked at it, there was nowhere for it to move out on the other side, it looks like it was riveted in...

Is there something I'm missing? I need some illustrated step-by-step instructions but it's all writting like it's oh-so-easy. I honestly need help, because I want to use it but save the original stock.

That front piece has a little button on it you need to press in to slide it forward..... try using the cleaning rod to press it in. then press in the spring to get the other ring that is up the stock a bit, they com off but you might need to tap on them.

I am assuming that you are attempting to removed the barrled action. With that in mind I also assume that the problem you are facing is the removal of the upper handguard from the stock assembly. On the right side of the stock just behind the bayon. lug are two steel rings (bands) that encircle the stock and upper handguard. between these two is a piece of spring steel running front to back band. in the front ring is a small rise within a hole, possibly the 'rivet' you mentioned. Using the threaded end of the cleaning rod or any drift punch which will fit inside the hole, press the 'rivet' into the stock while slidding the band forward until it clears the 'rivet'. You should now be able to lift the spring up and remove it from the dentent in the stock. At this point you should have enough play in the hand guard to lift it from the barrel. If you have the hooded front sight still intact you probably can't remove the barrel bands. However if you remove the hood from the sight assembly you can take the bands off. I own a VZ24 Mauser and they are almost identical to the Modl. 98.

The frontmost barrel band has a small hole in it that you stick a round punch in to depress the end of the spring so it will slide forwards. Now, over the last fifty or so years they really get a crud that hardens like a banker's heart, so first, soak it in some solvent to soften up the cosmolene or grease or oil or whatever. Then put the tip end of the barrel in a padded vice and have at it. I collect mauser rifles and have seen this hundreds of times. Soak it and it will come.....
