I have to admit that being a former US Marine, my answer is biassed.

This nation has certainly produced some of the greatest leaders in military history, but my personal pick is Lt. Gen. Louis B. "Chesty" Puller. He is actually related to Gen. Patton and I believe Gen. Lee as well.

General Puller was fearless, honorable, and truly earned the love and respect of his subordinates. He personally saw to his men no matter where they were stationed along the battlefield, right down to the most junior enlisted man. He inspired courage in those around him by his disregard to personal safety and comfort.....and so very much more.

Read his biograhy; Marine! The Life Of Chesty Puller, by Burke Davis to learn the whole story. Many of his srategies and policies are still in use in the Corps today, and many of his feats are Marine Corps legend. So, a toast to Chesty Puller wherever you are!

That's a tough one. I'm going to mention three who are so close that I can't really choose. First is George Washington, he basically had to build an army from nothing. He was greatly outnumbered the entire war by a better equipped, better supplied, and better trained army. He also controlled the naval forces as well. Based on this, it is military tradition to consider him the highest ranking general of all time.
Secondly, is Robert E. Lee. While at West Point, he never received a single demerit which is just about impossible to do. During the Civil War, he pretty much out-generaled every general that the North threw at him. In addition, like Washington had a smaller, more poorly equipped and supplied army.
Lastly, is Winfield Scott. He served in every capacity over a long period of time (from the War of 1812 to the Civil War). He wrote the manual that the Army used for the better part of a century, designed uniforms that are still worn at West Point, and designed the first large scale amphibous attack in US history (War against Mexico).

U.S. Grant, he won the Civil War and defeated General Lee. He was the only Union general to do so. He came up with a simple plan. It was the North has more troops and guns. Just keep attacking, never retreat, and we will overwhelm the South.

Robert E. Lee replaced into an exceedingly sturdy familiar, yet whilst in comparison with the scope of background, he replaced into not the final. To be trustworthy, he took an undermanned, underacted military and held returned an overpowering invasion for countless without put off years. besides the indisputable fact that, as sturdy as he replaced right into a logistics and maneuver, he replaced into by no skill able to bringing the enemy to a decisive conflict. and that's what marks the excellence of those generals in background who're the very properly suited.

Have to say patton. He was a fantastic tactician and stategist. He also was not afaid to be up front and in the battle.

He was a bit crazy but I think that makes him more qualified for being the best and if you beleive him he fought and led many battles thoughout different time periods in history

If you just went with greatest battlefield commander I would have to say Chesty Puller. I dont think anyone else motivated his troops so much.
