Im taking the bus to school tommorow and it is my first time using the bus. I wrote the schedule down for departure and arrival and a map just in case. What should I know about the bus schedules because i hear sometimes they arrive late and do you pay when you get on the bus or when you get off, with coins only or cash only or both? Also do you press a button when you want the bus to stop? thanks by the way this in the long beach are and fullerton area.

You pay when you get on the bus. Usually they take coins. It depends on the bus company. You usually press a button or pull a cord to signal the driver that you want to get off at the next stop.

You are talking about the OCTD system. It depends on the bus stop. On the schedule, there is often an asterisk next to the bus stop that is a scheduled time. Those without are approximate times. What this means is that if the bus arrives early at a scheduled stop, it will wait until the clock strikes the time before leaving. If it's an approximate time stop, then it's up to you to estimate how much earlier it may get there.

You pay when you get on the bus. If you need a transfer, ask for it then.

A cable runs down the top of the windows that you can pull to inform the driver you want to get off at the next opportunity.

Interesting.

You wait at the bus stop for the bus to arrive. Yes, sometimes they are late; other times they are a bit early. However, it's more common for them to be late.

Once it arrives, you may need to "flag down" the bus by waving your arm vertically. Usually this is not necessary, because the bus driver will assume you want to get on. But sometimes they may not be sure if you want to get on, so flag it down if necessary. Knowing when to do this comes with time and practice, but do it if it looks like the bus isn't going to stop for you.

Now get on. There is a farebox at the front of the bus, next to the driver. Put your fare inside, show your pass, or whatever you use for the payment system. Bus drivers do NOT carry change. All coins and bills should be accepted, but you will not get a refund if you overpay.

There should be some method of asking the bus driver to stop the bus. In some places it's a button, other times there is a cord you pull. Watch what other people on the bus do and imitate them. You have to do it before you reach your stop, not too late, or the bus driver will pass the stop.

Since this is your first time, you should sit in the front of the bus (if an elderly or disabled person boards the bus, you may have to give up your seat to them). Ask the bus driver to tell you when you are near your stop.

If you have to take multiple buses, there may be a 'transfer' system. Ask the bus driver if you need to take more than one bus. Also ask when transfers expire, if there are any.

May God bless you.

there is a line you pull to let the bus driver know he needs to let you off. i never seen a bus with a button. pay attention to the stops. some buses are late but i never been on one that was more then 5 minutes late if your worried about that take one that is earlier (which should be 15mins-1 hours earlier depending on the route). You pay before you get on so have your money ready. Have change or dollar bills because the bus I went on does not give you change back. Sometimes people had to ask if anyone have change for a $5. It is a cat bus I took and that was three years ago. You can ask your parents to get your a prepaid bus card (they can get it at the main bus station center where their last stop is). It is much easier. My friends even got ones for $50 and it lasted for 30 days. Hang on to the card that pops up after you pay. You can use it for a transfer so you dont have to pay for the next bus. They usually last for 1-3 hours .
