I am 81. Once in a great while I fall and hit the floor. So far no broken bones. But I have a hard time getting back up. Yesterday I fell in my back yard, I had to scoot on my butt for five minutes at least to get to some steps. It was a very exhausting effort and I had to get my breath before trying to lift my butt up onto the first, then second step. After that I was able to slowly twist myself around, grab a railing post and lift myself up.
I think my leg muscles must be weak because it used to be no problem just using them to get back up. I walk a mile at least every other day. My arm muscles could use some exercise too.
Can you recommend some easy to do exercises?

At your age I wouldn't want to give you advice because I dont want you to get hurt. But on PBS they have the exercise show for older people maybe you can try to watch that and do those exercises and they might be able to help you a little bit.

I think you should have your doctor recommend you to a physical therapist and an occupational therapist. The physical therapist can teach you some exercises that will help you to get fit safely so you will be stronger. An occupational therapist should be able to help you be able to learn how to do things around the house, avoid falls, and take care of yourself. These professionals are trained to work with people of all ages and abilities. I hope you have great health!

Since you fall sometimes and have such a hard time getting up, you might also consider moving into an assisted-living facility or have a neighbor or relative check on you regularly. There are also panic buttons you can buy that you can use when you need help and you are alone.

EDIT: I think that Roland has given you an excellent answer above. Falling truly is a more serious issue than you make it out to be.

awww sweetie... please talk to your doctor about the falling... tomorrow if possible. The onset of weakness could be from any number of medical issues. Some would believe it is just the age... however look at the 90's to 100's still getting around. The doctor could order physical therapy for you if he feels it is necessary. Please seek help before it gets worse or you get hurt. I see this all the time in elderly patients... EVERY night we get several elderly patients that have fallen and they come to the ER because they hurt themselves....
They get admitted and since they can not get out of bed they continue to get weaker and then the problems really begin.

I had to do an edit after looking at the one that hit before my post..... PLEASE DO NOT DO ANY EXERCISES FROM TELEVISION UNTIL YOU SEE YOUR DOCTOR!!!!!!!! You could get hurt because we do not know why you are having the weakness... you need someone working with you to keep you steady and helping you build strength......

Water aerobics are good for general exercise. If there is an indoor pool in your area or the YMCA they would have info for you. I work with home bound seniors and I also suggest a cell phone to keep in your pocket for emergency's. You never know when you might need it. They have prepaid that you only pay for what you need before you use it.
